Democrats See Gains as Donald Trump Targets a Wife
New York Times ^ | March 25, 2016 | AMY CHOZICK and TRIP GABRIEL

Senator Ted Cruz may have urged Donald J. Trump to leave his wife, Heidi, “the hell alone,” but there is one group that is quietly hoping Mr. Trump’s attacks on his rival’s spouse and other women will continue indefinitely: Democrats.

As Hillary Clinton turns her attention to a general election campaign, Mr. Trump’s nasty skirmish with Mr. Cruz, including his warning to “spill the beans” about Mrs. Cruz, without offering specifics, and his reposting of a message that mocked her looks, have played into a crucial Democratic strategy to defeat Mr. Trump in November: to portray him as an unabashed sexist.

Mrs. Clinton’s allies hope to sway suburban and independent women, who will play an outsize role in deciding the fall election, to support her candidacy by pushing this theme. These Democrats say the matchup would be historic: one pitting the first female nominee of a major political party against a rival who has repeatedly dismissed and disparaged women and their looks.

“I want Donald Trump to talk every single day for the rest of this election,” said Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. “He just needs to keep spewing what he has been spewing.”

Although Mrs. Clinton will present herself as a protector of women, the political strategy is more about math than morality.

“Suburban women have been a critical swing group in the past, and there’s a lot about Donald Trump that is offensive to them,” said Geoff Garin, a Democratic pollster who served as a chief strategist to Mrs. Clinton in 2008.

Outside groups that support Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy have begun to track and compile comments Mr. Trump has made about women into a decades-long montage of misogyny to be used in the fall.

“...So is Hillary not a woman?”

A good question since her history really clouds the issue...

Cruz’s Pac targeted Trump’s wife and he took up for her.

You reap what you sow. people should know better than to get into a gutter fight with Donald Trump. but they keep underestimating him and overtestimating themselves.

Suburban women don’t feel sorry for elite women like Megyn McCain, Megyn Kelly, Goldman Sachs elites, Clinton(more women probably like bill’s seemingly good economic record).

Who watches this trash tv, trashing all sorts of elite women?

It’s mostly 50 year old white women watching this crap.

I wonder if the Trumpster will go after McCain’s wifes donors.

Trump treat everyone as individuals, not a group. Every time a female is mocked, media/politicians automatically leap to the conclusion that an entire group was attacked. Its so illogical and ridiculous. Its embarrassing.
People like CRuz are still in this PC world. Attacking Cruz is not an attack on ALL MEN or Cubans. Sheesh

The much maligned (on FR) Maureen Dowd said early on “getting in a fight with Donald Trump is like being thrown into a bag of badgers”.

You will notice she herself has carefully avoided ending up in this situation.

It’s really hard time believe that anyone could think this clown could beat even a candidate as pathetic as Hillary.

Exactly! I agree with you. All this hyper sensitivity of Trump’s attitude toward women is ridiculous. I am not the least bit offended by anything he has said because it was the truth.
Go Trump!

If you repeat the lie about who put the picture of Trump’s wife out maybe 30-49 more times, it will become true. Keep it up...

If this is a contest of who can hurt themselves the most, Cruz won.

By defending his wife against a Trump attack? Illogical.

Let’s get it straight. Cruz attacked Trump’s wife with a nude photo.
****************************
You should try to get it straight.

It was an anti-Trump PAC that ran the ad in Utah and it is not connected to the Cruz campaign.

Inside the Trump bubble, they tend to believe the country at large sees the world in the same way they do. Trump polls, for now, worse than all other GOP candidates against her. They believe that Trump will bring up her emails; Benghazi, her crooked past... But these are already factored in these polls. The country is aware Hillary is crooked. The fact that every poll shows Trump getting clobbered by a criminal doesn’t bode well.

Yeah, yeah, I know. “B-b-b-but Carter was 30 points ahead of Reagan in March of 1980.” Carter wasn’t viewed as a criminal in March of 1980, either. Just incompetent.

If Trump doesn’t change the way he conducts himself, and I don’t believe he will, get ready for president Hillary.

Wait till the DNC airs all his comments in Sept

Are you on Mars?

Kind of ironic that trump was lashing out because folks (if they're against Trump they are probably for Cruz - face it) had went after his wife.

Then, Cruz goes all ballistic and self righteous about how the one thing that gets his dander up is an attack on his wife - ironic -- no?
