AUSTIN (KRLD-AM) – The latest spike in License to Carry gun applications is expected to take Texas past a significant milestone.
CHL Licensed Instructor Michael Cargill owns Central Texas Gun Works.
He says the 140 percent jump in applications from December 2015 through February is caused by a combination of fears of terrorism brought on by the shootings in San Bernardino and President Obama’s proposed gun control laws.
“Then you have the new law that went into effect January the first (Open Carry)…all of that plays into it, and that’s why we’re seeing numbers. For the first time the State of Texas will actually go over one million licensed holders,” says Cargill.
From December through February, DPS received 136,000 License to Carry applications compared to just 57,000 over that period last year.
DPS has been forced to increase staffing to handle the volume of applications.

And nobody ever mentions why they’re really buying guns, the whole reason the Founders put in the Second Amendment into the Bill of Rights.
One million Texans have guns? I dare say that’s not nearly enough!!!
That is just the ones who are legal for concealed carry.
Texas has a law that you can legally tote while in a vehicle.

That’s Open Cary only.
Guns, in Texas? Who knew?
“One Million Texans With Guns”
A good start.
>>> And nobody ever mentions why theyre really buying guns... <<<
Why, for the zombie apocalypse of course!
Just in case the zombies riot this summer.
I was online checking out getting a CCL today here in Houston. A firing range near me offers classes. But before I can even sign up for the class I have to go to the Texas Department of Public Safety website and apply for a license and have my fingerprints done and give them all kinds of other crap.
First of all, a thorough check, including fingerprints, was done on me when I bought the damned gun. So I thought about it and it dawned on me the only place I’m ever going to “carry” a gun is in my car and on my nightstand so I don’t need to jump through hoops for the state.
Most businesses won’t allow you to carry inside their business. And I doubt any large public event like a ball game would let you carry. I can carry a long rifle in public without a license. I would never do that because some do gooder would call the cops and hick constables would show up and point their guns at me and yell “Get on the God damned ground! On the ground, mother ....!” If they don’t just shoot me.
So, I’ll just keep what I have and if I’m ever asked about them I’ll say “I sold them. That’s why I never got a CCL.”
1 million!? That’s pittance compared to the population in Texas.
Bet they’re only counting Texans with a Texas CHL.
I’m a Texan with a Florida CHL.
And I’m sure there are many many more.
I’m in the same boat. Just don’t need it. For now.
That's a million carry permits. Permits are not needed to own so way more than that have guns. And most of those have way more than one gun. As a guess, I'd say there are at least as many guns in TX as there are people.
“Most businesses wont allow you to carry inside their business.”
My experience has been the opposite.
True, as long as it is concealed in the vehicle and not on your person.
God bless Texas.
don’t KcuF with Texas...
Only thing that keeps Texas from falling into the Gulf of Mexico?
Oklahoma sucks...
(It’s a joke...I’m from Tahlequah...)
I would also guess that negative public opinion on guns is turning around.
It’s better to be able to carry (legally), than to not be able to.
Take a couple of hours off and get a permit. You’ll feel like you’ve accomplish something worthwhile.
1 million Texans with guns - yes, as others have mentioned, that is 1 million with CHLs. There are “just a few” more Texans with guns.
I remember when Waco occurred in 1993 - even THEN, Time Magazine said that there were an estimated 50 million guns in Texas. I’d say that there are at least 25 million more right now, possibly more than that.
Come and take them, Leftists - just be sure that your life insurance and funeral plans are in order.
