Earl Hamner Jr. who created the long-running CBS series The Waltons died on Thursday aged 92 in Los Angeles.
The Virginia native died in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after a battle with cancer, according to a posting by his family on Facebook.
Hamner married wife Jane in October 1954 in New York City and they had a son Scott and daughter Caroline together.
He died surrounded by family playing his favourite John Denver music, according to the Facebook posting.
'He was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2014, and had surgery performed in July on his 91st birthday,' the post said.
The cancer metastasized and Hamner underwent 'very invasive' surgery with an uncertain outcome.
Hamner recovered and watched the final production of the 2015 documentary Earl Hamner: Storyteller and also accepted the Media Heritage Founder's Award, according to family.
'He never got enough of this great gift of life with which we have all been so deeply blessed -- and he hung on as tightly as anyone could with insatiable passion and wonder. My heart is broken as I say, "Goodnight, Dad!",' the posting read.
Hamner created The Waltons based on his upbringing in Schuyler, Virginia and also narrated the show.
He earlier wrote the 1961 book Spencer's Mountain that inspired a 1963 film of the same name and the TV series.

We stopped by their neighborhood in the Virginia mountains when we visited Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’ home not too far from Charlottesville.
Hamner’s boyhood home wa open to the public at the time along with a small museum.

I remember when you could watch TV surrounded by your family and not be insulted, embarrassed or disgusted.
RIP. The Waltons were an integral part of my childhood.
RIP
But why was he only surrounded by family who were aged 92?
He also wrote eight episodes of the original ‘Twilight Zone’.
