Auto giant Ford is planning a new assembly plant south of the U.S. border, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, and will sharply increase factory output from Mexico just months after signing a labor deal.
Citing people familiar with the matter, The Journal reported that Ford will add half a million units of annual capacity from Mexico starting in 2018, which is double the amount it built in 2015. The new assembly complex will be based in San Luis Potosi, and Ford will expand an existing facility near Mexico City, the publication added.
The move may heighten the debate over cheaper foreign labor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Manufacturing labor costs in Mexico are approximately 1/5 of those in the United States. In November, Ford signed a new labor contract that gave factory workers higher wages. A Ford spokesperson did not immediately return CNBC's request for comment.
The full report can be found on the Wall Street Journal's website.
It would wonderful if several true-blue American engineers could start a 100% made in America automobile.
Btw, why would an American company reward a country who’s people have zero, none, no respect for U.S. rules, laws, borders, sovereignty or our people?
What’s up with that Thibo?
As large businesses leave this country and middle class keeps shrinking, I am kind of wondering who they plan on selling all these cars to.
I wonder that too.
Without a strong middle class, how can customers afford the products?? With credit cards??? Then we have a credit bubble when too many default on credit payments????
When will Ford announce price reductions from the lowered production cost and the no regulation panacea of Mexico?
Most cars in the USA are made by non union workers now.
Check out Elio motors.
Heh. Donald Trump isn't going to do a single thing about this. He uses foreign labor whenever he can.
The answer is to to stop all the Obamacare and job-killing safety and environmental regulations that make America too expensive to do business in.
To impose tariffs while leaving the current bad business climate in place will only hurt Americans even more.
Oh sure, as Ford builds their empire in Mexico, Ford lobbyist quietly support and push for more U.S. regulations and taxes for their competitors back in the U.S.
D.C. disciples of deceit suckered Americans once again. And again and again, and again.
The Elio is an enclosed motorcycle. Cool.
Hopefully more true blue Americans will get their can do Yankee ingenuity back.
I am not going to tell you how to run things but at some point a decision is going to have to be made whether the Free Traders are a good addition here. I would think after Trump seals the nomination they would shut up. Who knows.
Hey Ford;
Don’t build any more for my wife or me. We won’t drive a Mexican POS. Not certain which brand, but it will be AMERICAN. Been checking around. Both Hondas and Toyotas are 76% American. That’s better than any % Mexican.
Apparently you confuse business with government and politics.
Business is about sales and resulting profits. You insert politics of government failure or perhaps even government policy as a corporate responsibility. It can be argued that politics unfavorable to profits at both the city, state and local level make manufacturing here unprofitable
What happened was that America induced Ford and of course others to find labor elsewhere. remember, labor is like electricity and sand, a commodity
All part of the “new world order” old man Bush talked about. It’s one big global economy.
I’m starting to believe in those stones in Georgia. The UN has to get rid of a lot of people. Maybe that’s why the world’s leaders support the terrorists. With them and abortion on demand they can cut the number of mouths to feed. Especially all those who lose their jobs and can’t afford a new car.
it would be nice.
Btw, why would an American company reward a country whos people have zero, none, no respect for U.S. rules, laws, borders, sovereignty or our people?
Whats up with that Thibo?
See if you can sell that BS to the hundreds of thousands of American victims who've been robbed, beaten, shot, murdered, knifed, raped, burglarized, and ran over.
Apparently you confuse business with government and politics.
So tell me, why should be care about a company that takes thousands of jobs from the U.S. into Mexico?
Do we have some kind of allegiance with Ford or Carrier et al?
So what you're saying is other than profits, Ford has zero, no allegiance with America right?
Ford is an American icon
Ford is truly America and remains America
You are now confusing the UAW with America. The UAW is not America and is being eliminated by being abandoned by the companies upon which it depended for life.
So what you’re saying is other than profits, Ford has zero, no allegiance with America right?
You evaded the question, try again.
As I stated before this article is old - from February 7 2016.
Following is from the article dated March 23, 2016
In an interview with CNBC, Ford CEO Mark Fields said that the automaker would be here to stay. He also said he had outlined his companys plans in a letter to Trump.
Didn’t see any mention of outlining his plans to Cruz. Mr Trump is a business man. Sen. Cruz is a politician. How many American jobs did Sen. Cruz save??
