Kasich and Cruz quietly work to persuade delegates to break with GOP voters in a contested convention.
When South Dakota's Republican activists convened in Pierre to pick their delegates to the Republican national convention, they got an unexpected visitor. Merle Madrid, senior aide to Ohio Gov. John Kasich, had flown in from Columbus to make an appeal: If the convention fails to elect front-runner Donald Trump on the first ballot, consider Kasich on the second even if the states Republican voters sent them there to back Trump or Ted Cruz.
Madrid was polite and earnest , but according to interviews with 17 of the states 29 delegates, he came up empty.
"Kasich will not get my vote no matter what he does. That aint gonna happen," said delegate Allen Unruh, a Sioux Falls chiropractor and tea party activist.
Madrids visit to South Dakota on Saturday marked one of the earliest signs that the shadow campaign for the Republican nomination has begun. Kasich and Cruz are scrambling to secure commitments from bound delegates to break off on a second-ballot and vote against Trump. In many cases, that means asking delegates to buck Republican primary voters in the name of settling on a nominee.
The fight will heat up in April, when a slew of states including Arizona, Colorado and North Dakota begin selecting their own slate of delegates, using methods ranging from statewide and Congressional district conventions to meetings of state party leaders to county-level votes or caucuses.
But if Madrids results are any indication, its not Kasich that threatens to steal Trumps delegates in Cleveland its Cruz.

But the paid trolls keep telling us that Cruz is a ‘principled conservative’. /s
Nothing but lying, conniving thieves. The whole bunch of them.
Something we’ve been complaining about, here, for years. To see ANYONE back either one of these GOPee posers, is beyond belief.
Cruz is basically unlikable, IMO. And I really don’t like how his wife got promoted to manager at Goldman Sachs seven weeks after he got elected to the Senate.
...someone else wants the votes.
Oh, the horrors! Burn it all down!
Once the delegates take a peek out the window at the streets of Cleveland, they’ll be afraid NOT to nominate Trump
All of the unethical maneuvering and scheming behind closed doors makes me sick. How have we sunk so low????
People are concerned about improper language, ha! I’m more concerned about lies, cheating and backroom bribes and deals.
“But if Madrids results are any indication, its not Kasich that threatens to steal Trumps delegates in Cleveland its Cruz.”
Oh, the horrors of a man who claims to be Christian! God will be the One to bring him down.
Keep your eye on this....(Ballotpedia Logo The Encyclopedia of American Politics">
Trump will beat Ms. Clinton....'step and fetch-it' for the "Clinton Foundation".
Brokered Convention is suicide.
Stealing the nomination from the front runner is electing Hillary.
This continued pipe-dream by Cruz supporters is working directly to elect Hillary.
It is impossible to "deny Trump his delegates!
Please ignore any such postings as the subject is as empty of truth as Peeps are of a spinal column!
Many states have yet to hold their primaries/caucuses, so there are no delegates to be chosen to represent whomever places wherever in this race.
March is way too early in the process to determine delegates to manipulate.
As a past delegate to a few conventions, I was pledged to place my vote for "Candidate X" depending on the outcome of our (the State of Kansas) Caucus and the State Party Chair, reads off their list what candidates get how many of our state's delegate numbers.
I didn't go to the microphone and tell what my vote was - not once, not ever, nor did anyone ever contact me attempting to get me to change my vote. Our "votes" were pledged at the outset based upon the proportion of how our state voted. Had we had "winner take all" all our votes would have been for the majority win of our state (but we do not have winner take all.)
The only time I could have changed my vote is if no one won on the first ballot, and that appears to be quite likely this time.
Then and only then would I be free to vote for the candidate I would chose, which in this case, would be the same candidate for which I would be pledged this year, IF I AM CHOSEN which hasn't happened yet.
If your hero was a real man and not petty and vengeful he could win outright. But he won’t which is just as well since he can’t win the general. If he would stay off what ever he does before his junior high school asinine tweets would have helped. Too late now.
Here is your lying, hypocritical hero:
We are pledged to vote ahead of time, we do not personally take to the microphone and announce our vote - and especially, were I ever to "look out the window" at a riotous crowd demanding I vote for a specific person - I would vote the opposite to that threat!
I don't make threats nor do I cowtow to any - not now, not ever!!!
The man has more people (at least 65%) aching to vote against him than for him and we don't - yet - have "majority rule" thankfully, or this country would be ruled by the mob!
We are a Democratic Republic, not a pure democracy where mobs rule, thank God for that.

Every Trumpster should watch this clip....10 x a day. This is what our mindset should be. Listen to the language, it’s important and timely. It fits, in many ways.

This should be our battle call, all the way to Cleveland. :)
