In the movie, the outburst comes when a political rival goes after the Presidents girlfriend, played by Annette Bening.
Cruz is clearly a popcorn-loving movie nerd, having quoted lines from "The Usual Suspects," "The Princess Bride" and "Jerry Maguire" all along the campaign trail.

it’s a left wing movie with a left wing president.
wouldn’t want to quote anything from it.
or quote a guy who blames his cancer publicly on sex with his wife.

I had also heard somewhere that Cruz has an audiographic memory.

At least Ted can get points for originality . . . oh, wait, he can't.
As for lines I like to steal, one of my favorites is from an episode of The New Outer Limits and I'd adapt it in addressing muslims who might threaten to kill me: "If you try to dispose of me, I WILL dispose of you!"

What a loser this guy is. Not even his comebacks are original.
To: McGruff
You’d think bright boy Cruooz would figured out to say something original.

Didn't a Cruz recommending PAC attack Trump's wife? Didn't Trump's wife have her own company and career without needing her politician husband to back her job at Goldman-Sachs. Politician's wife getting a job and the job helping the husband for cash. Isn't that a Obama story?

I don’t even see where Cruz’s statement is even a deterrent.
“Don’t mess with my wife, because she’s tough.” Yet, he gives no examples or reasons to back up his claim. Sounds more like a bluff.

What is Heidi hiding?Google 'Heidi Cruz police report'

This is typical cruz.
He spends his life imitating Reagan, Princess Bride, etc.
He fails at being and authentic Ted Cruz.
Trump is Trump. Flaws and all.

“The Texas Senator used a line from the 1995 movie “The American President” to warn Trump to stop threatening his wife”
Someone else wrote it for Cruz. It does not sound like the way he usually speaks.
But the larger point is Trump told Cruz to stop attacking his wife. Releasing the naked pictures was creepy enough. But then playing the part of a Hollywood politician is just weird.
To: McGruff
Cruz is attacking Trump for defending his wife. A new low for Cruz.
