I think this is another example of Trump not making his Presidency run a life-long ambition. Cruz has had people in Utah forever, poured lots of cash in and Trump sort of just arrived.
I’m not being critical because considering Trump’s not a professional politician he’s done amazing things. I’m just saying in some of these states where old-fashioned groundwork and organization matters, Trump is still playing catch-up.

Personally I’ve already written off Utah because of the type of people who live there and the fact that it’s caucus format, which Cruz does well in.

It's important to note that Trump has done very poorly in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain states.
In other words, he has generally done better (with some exceptions) in "blue" states than in "red" states.

Trump wins in states with a lot of liberals. Conservative states reject him, except the ones that have the most "issues" with non-whites.
