South Africa risks turning into a “mafia state”, a senior governing party official has warned, as pressure grows on President Jacob Zuma over his links with a wealthy family.

Gwede Mantashe made the comments after deputy Finance Minister Mcebesi Jonas alleged the Gupta family had offered him a government promotion.

During a rowdy parliamentary session, Mr. Zuma denied the family had influenced cabinet appointments.

The opposition called on him resign.

Mr. Mantashe is the third most powerful person in the governing African National Congress (ANC), and his remarks suggest Mr. Zuma may be losing the confidence of influential members of the party as well, correspondents say. …

Just got back from South Africa...my third visit (I dated a South African woman years ago) but my first since Mandela came to power.The township with which I became slightly familiar years ago (near Johannesburg..we drove through it a few times) looked at least as bad,if not worse when I drove through it last month.And in talking to several drivers/guides we had on the safari to Kruger all seemed to be pessimistic about the country's future.That includes both the black ones *and* the white one (who was an Afrikaner).

We were wrong to oppose apartheid. Perhaps we should have known that; but we weren't told the truth about the situation.

Reportedly, most SA blacks will admit they were better off under apartheid. Sad, but true.

I can think of a number of countries which could use another thousand years of colonialism. Unfortunately, they will probably get Red-Chinese colonialism.

While the US will probably get Muslim colonialism; if The Regime gets its way.

Not that my opinion means much but I *am* tempted to think I know a bit more about the country than many Westerners.I'm inclined to believe that the best option,but certainly not a perfect one,would have been for the country to be split into two (or maybe even more) countries.One for the whites and at least one (if not more) for blacks.These countries would *fairly* divide the most fertile farmland,the areas where gold,diamonds and other minerals are found as well as taking into consideration other factors.

What little I know about the country says to me that it's understandable why the blacks didn't want to be ruled by whites and it was just as understandable why the reverse was also true.
