Even for high achievers (especially for high achievers?) ego can be a career-limiting liability.
Lets take the case of Ted Cruz, for example. As the Weekly Standard notes, Ted Cruz said that he wont humble himself before Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to smooth over the rough relationship he has developed with colleagues. (Specifically, he said he wont go on bended knee, with my hat in hand to McConnell.)
I can understand the Cruzs desire to preserve his outsider status, and we all have fallen victim to the temptation to gloat over our successes. But I still suspect this is a mistake. With Marco Rubio now out of the race, Cruz has an opportunity to get mainstream conservatives and establishment Republicans to coalesce around his candidacy. (Its important to note that their reservations have much less to do with his philosophy than they do with his personality and tactics.)
Now, I know he has said he would welcome Rubio supporters with open arms, but this sounded a tad perfunctory. Cruz has a real opportunity to close ranks behind him, but any signals he sends about holding grudges can only undermine his chances.

Cruz is many things, but stupid is not one of them. He knows the minute he closes ranks with McConnell is the minute he loses all the base support that is the only reason he is still #2 in this race rather than fishing in Kennebunkport with Jeb!.

Confusion by the GOPe that anyone wouldn’t go down on one knee (to do what, it doesn’t say) for their bosses. Hilarious.
The surest way to destroy his candidacy.
RATHER - McConnell should get on his knees to ask Cruz’s forgiveness. Mitch is a liar and an evil man.
He’s going to do it, he’s desperate
Why should Cruz apologize meekly for doing what is right?
It is Mitch who should apologize to the voters for failing to keep his promises.
Trump moves like a hare. Some advice from the tortoise could help win the race.
Cruz doesn’t really have much of a base support anyway. He has won less than 25% of the primaries...Trump about 75%. He has less than half the support in polls that Trump has and appears to have peaked...Trump is surging to over 50% now. It just isn’t even a close race and the states who are having primaries in the next few weeks will probably be more Trump friendly and Cruz is just plain waning. I do not think Trump will have difficulty getting the 1237 delegates...I think the race is just about over. The people are winning...as it should be.
Prediction: Mitch and Company will come to an agreement with Ted over an act of contrition that will satisfy Mitch. Cruz will comply, and then spin about the semantics about what he did, and “prove” that it just makes him more anti-establishment. That’s his MO: Give the establishment what they want when they need it, in a way that he can still trick people with spin.
He’s a DC insider to his very core. He’s plotted these games his whole life, and now that he’s losing badly to Trump, he’ll get more desperate, and it will just become more obvious with each passing day.
If he had principles, he’d have already given a very public “thanks but no thanks” to Linda Graham’s support. He hasn’t. In all actuality, he probably put a behind-the-scenes call in to Linda to ASK for that support.
McConnell (and others) should apologize to Cruz for lying about TPP/TPA as well as not supporting the shutdown over Obamacare. Then McConnell should resign and GO AWAY.
He’s already in bed with those people. He’s been able to conceal it for a long time. Neil Bush signing on to his campaign should of opened up a ton of eyes to Ted Cruz.
Trump has too much energy, he doesn’t rest before the finish line
Disagree. The only potential game-changer at this point is Kasich exiting the race. Does McConnell have the power to make Kasich get out? I seriously doubt it. Thus, no point in kissing up to McConnell. Better for Cruz to lose with his self-respect intact and give it a shot again in 2020.
“One of my favorite books on campaigning is James Carville and Paul Begallas terrifically-titled book”
“In his book, Hardball, Chris Matthews advises: Dont get mad, dont get even, get ahead. If Cruz wants to be president, this is a good maxim to follow.”
This is your typical Cruz and the establishment should work together types.
He admires Begalia, Carville And Chris Matthews and wants Cruz and McConnell to get together and control the Republican Party.
My opinion? Yesterday’s Lindsey Graham backing of Cruz was an olive branch to see if Cruz reciprocates. Definitely a test for Cruz.
Cruz should get on his knees and beg for mercy from McConnell
if he wants GOPe’s support. Cruz is power hungry enough to do it.
Cruz shouldn’t have been a gullible fool and should have understood what TPA/TPP was from the get go.
Ted Cruz needs to apologize to Senator Mitch McConnell for Ted’s boorish, childish, unacceptable behavior of calling Senator McConnell a liar on the Senate Floor.
Yeah Tedderio has unbridled ambition.
