Or just don’t get a car that talks to home. My ‘16 Elentra has no wifi, no OnStar clone, none of that. Really all those things are extra features, you can very easily get a new car without them.

Don’t you still get the ‘black box’ recorder on board?

Just pullin’ yer leg, Gaffer.

I read the odometer on the wifes car (F-150) and take it for service every 5k (easy to calculate on the odometer). I still crawl under the old trucks (’97 F-250 and ‘79 Bronco). It does seem more like a chore than it used to.

Sure, that’s been standard since EFI took over the world. But you’ve got to plug into those, if somebody’s gotten access to the port they’re already in your car.

And I hear just yesterday all NEW cars are mandated to have automatic breaking.

HOORAY for government.

Check out OBDLink.com, it sounds like what you want. Sounds like a neat gadget for fleet management, too, as long as the parking lot is within Wi-Fi range. Mobile apps and PC network compatible.

“I’m avoiding getting new vehicles partly for that reason.”

Besides the hacking, the daily problems with wifi signals even in our own homes without the extra impact of extreme heat and or cold in a locked vehicle and on the road may have crippling impacts on those wifi systems and maybe the car.

Most months of the year, my home Comcast wifi is good around the house with some plug in wifi extenders. The first month into spring and fall with the sun blasting directly into and on to our office window where the modem is, can neutralize wifi in areas were we normally use it.

This week with really bright sunshine has been the beginning of the problem of lost or weak wifi signals which will last until May. Yesterday, I had to plug my chrome book into a wifi extender and get a direct signal versus wifi for most of the day. From about 3 pm to 10pm last night my good wifi signal was back. We have cloudy overcast now, so our wifi signal is 4 bars throughout the house.

If that happens is a controlled temp environment without the shaking/bumping from driving, what will happen with the units on the road.

Also, the demand on the main auto batteries with all of this electronic gear can result in a lot of the new high end vehicles needing a professional battery jumpstart or a tow to get the vehicle serviced and all systems realigned.

So, we plan to keep our 12 year old Lexus ES and 6+ year old Honda Ridgeline to avoid these potential problems.

Note, NOTHING IS PLUGGED INTO THE CAR.
They accessed the head unit of the entertainment system remotely, nothing plugged in at all.

Note: THE ONLY THING I SAID ABOUT PLUGGING INTO THE CAR WAS TO ACCESS THE BLACK BOX. EVERYTHING ELSE I SAID WAS RELATED TO WIFI, GPS, AND OTHER EXTRA SYSTEMS THAT ONE CAN EASILY NOT GET INSTALLED.

Since apparently you think shouting helps.

You don’t need to touch the black box.
Don’t even need to touch the car.

Somebody ASKED about the black box, so I answered. You really should bother to read the conversation and understand what is and isn’t being said.

Only in modern STUPID times would the law allow this situation to exist in the first place. The path to communicating with vehicle systems that control important functions should be a HARDWARE path only. You should have to physically hook in with a cable in order to effect those systems in any way.

Well if you live outside the “salt belt” you can pretty much go on forever with a rig, as long as you are willing to do the upkeep.

Our son got an early inheritance of our OJ Simpson Bronco, the last model year. He is an avid bike rider and doesn’t put that much mileage on the Bronco. There is an excellent Ford dealer where he lives, and the guy in charge of the repair area, told my son the same thing and to never sell it. Just change the oil and new tires every 4-5 years regardless of the tread.

When our kids were teenagers decades ago, I bought a 70 Blazer, it outlasted them. Our oldest son inherited it and had a bidding auction party in our driveway. He sold it to a Hispanic male nurse, I knew and invited to the auction. He had 3 teen sons. It lasted through all of them. The youngest one now owns it. He is a manager and in an auto parts store, and he drives it to work everyday.

It still looks great with the Cal Trans Orange. I got it at a Cal Trans used vehicle auction.

“On any car after a ‘96 you can plug in a $25 device, get some $20 software to match the car make and year, and get all that info over wifi or bluetooth. I use an ipod touch but it is available cor android and I am sure laptops as well.”

One of my wife’s nephews has the old mechanical skills and was a major Japanese auto importer tech weenie until last year. So he is both old and new cutting edge school.

He opened up his own shop and does the electronic check and then the maintenance needed to bring the so called pre owned to qualify for the extended warranties on used vehicles.

He has advised us to buy one of these for each vehicle with the software to know what is wrong or okay with a vehicle.
