Sarah Palin called her husband Todd "tough" after he was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident.

She wasn't kidding: a source tells PEOPLE that Todd's injuries were so extensive they required six hours of surgery overnight after the crash.

Hope he’s feeling better too. Our family has 7 snowmachines and some years we put 2k miles each on our favorite sleds. People ride them right from home, trails everywhere, no fences like back east. My 2016 wt skandic sure rolls over easy enough; unlike all my other skandics. They keep getting bigger too. Todd had an expedition I think, somewhat like the skandic with swing arms. I ended up under my skandic twice this year (early in the season) easy to do until the trail washouts fill in with snow. I had a heck of a time the second roll over; I was pinned down hill under sled and by myself, ha ha. I got out but blk and blu and sore for a week. Don’t worry, Todd will recover and be back to riding nx winter; everybody does it up here.

Last i heard he was in the Mat Su regional hospital, not in Anchorage. I was in the catholic Providence Hospital back in 2014 after being the victim of a knife asssult, nearly died, but i was absolutely horrified at the treatment there, first off they somehow put the wrong armband on me, gave me some iv solution that felt like battery acid, the nurses were outright sadistic, the room was filthy, food wasn’t too bad though.

The native hospitsls i hear are much better. But i will NEVER go to Providence if i can help it, they only got me there by helo and while i was totally out. I still have nightmares about that place.

Get well Todd, and stay firm Sarah.

Medical translation: his heart, lung and head injuries are stable so now we can fix his fractures.

this means they figure he will live,

I don’t know if he was another victim of that 22 y/o mutton-head who was deliberately driving into snowmobiles involved in the big sledding event. A lot is not yet being said.

No. Not related. And I very much doubt there is any cover up going on here.

The drunken guy, 26-year-old Arnold Demoski was riding on a snowmobile (snow machine as they call it up there) when he deliberately (allegedly in a drunk blackout) hit two dog sled teams (not snowmobiles) on the Iditarod Dog Sled race route at the checkpoint village of Nulato early on Saturday morning, killing one dog and injuring several other. Demoski was arrested on Saturday afternoon after turning himself in.

Todd Palin was injured while riding on his snow machine Sunday night at the family’s cabin in Matanuska-Susitna, north of Wassila and it was reported that no other riders were involved. Snow machines can weigh 600 pounds and travel at 90 miles per hour or more. When they hit an unseen obstacle, say a large rock or tree stump, etc., they can flip over and onto the rider or throw them a great distance not unlike a motorcycle. Evidently Todd was wearing a helmet, something that may have been a life saver and has promoted for their use, but the accident occurred at around 8:00 PM so it may have been dark, perhaps not a good idea.

Matanuska-Susitna is approximately 300 miles from Nulato.

Google Maps

FWIW, snow machine accidents in Alaska are not uncommon. They are both a form of recreation and of day to day transportation for some during the winter.

In Alaska snow machines are not toys. They are a necessity. Getting to grocery etc with a couple feet of snow on the ground is not something that even a 4 wheeler can do.

He was most likely out trail riding.

The Palins live in Wasilla with all the paved, plowed roads needed to get around.

It's not like they live in the Alaska bush.

The accident happened near the Palin family’s cabin in Matanuska-Susitna not at their home in Wassila.

Thanks for the Info Eska, Alaskans need Snowmobiles to get around, I know this was normal for Todd and all of you.

Glad you are okay from your roll over too! My Cousin works for Alaska Airlines and lives in Wasilla and being a Missouri girl she thinks Snowmaching is a HOOT!

One of my kids just had a two hour operation to insert a pin and some wire for a broken elbow.

That was just one injury.

The X-Ray showing the pin is pretty cool

Todd hit a barrell hidden in the snow back in 2008 while
riding which resulted in a broken arm.

Thanks. This is the best report of the incident I’ve read so far. It indicates cause, circumstance, and effect. Most the other stories only focus on the last part, the resulting effect.
