HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) A 71-year-old Hampton man shot and killed a teenage robbery suspect Sunday afternoon, according to police.
Officers responded to the 2100 block of Kecoughtan Road around 2:45 p.m. Sunday for the report of an attempted robbery and shooting in the area. They arrived on scene to find 18-year-old Jafari Mitchell suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS transported Mitchell to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to police, Mitchell and a 15-year-old approached the 71-year-old man; one of them pulled out a gun and demanded money. The victim also had a gun and fearing for his safety, he shot Mitchell.
Hampton Police Public Information Officer Ashley Jenrette said, The victim did fear for his safety. He was cooperative. He called 911, he remained on scene so officers could speak with him he will not be charged.
Police say there are no charges being sought against the 71-year-old man.
According to police, the 71-year-old who did not want to be interviewed, was legally carrying a gun, and acted in self-defense. Police say Mitchell was shot in the chest, and the 15-year-old remains in custody without bond.
Hampton police made it clear Mitchell put himself in harms way and went up against a man who also had a gun. 10 On Your Sides Andy Fox reminded the step-sister that according to police what he and the 15-year-old did in pulling a gun forced the victim to pull his gun too, and that he fired in self defense.
The step sister said, Jafari wasnt even hanging with that young man [the 15 year old].
However, police said he was on Sunday.
Mitchells family says he did not own a gun, police wont say which teen had the gun. WAVY went to the home of the 15-year-old and they had no comment. There is no more information on him because he is considered a juvenile.
The 15-year-old was charged with attempted robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony
It was crazy, I was upstairs watching a movie and I heard gunshots, Alesia Hammonds, who lives across the street, said. I was like, Ill just go see if anybody is outside, and there were forensics units and an ambulance.
Hammonds said she is just tired of the same story on what feels like a regular basis; young people turning to gun violence across the street from her home.
You would think being across the street it really wouldnt hit us so much, she sighed. But its just too close to home. Its too scary.
10 On Your Sides Andy Fox interviewed Mitchell in August about crime in his neighborhood. Click here to view that report.
In the final twist of irony, this is what Jafari Mitchell told 10 On Your Side last August when we asked him how he felt when he witnessed the drive by shooting, There are too many people dying in the world. We need to end this and stop the violence, thats all I know.
Ironically, Mitchell lost his life because he was killed after committing what police say was a violent act.
Yep. Not need to post a pic.
Jafari is Zimbabwean for ‘goat smell’.
Eight years and twelve years for the perps.
I'd feel better with 80 and 120.
Who the hell is it that really thinks these f-up murderers are going to come out more productive and law-abiding than when they went in?
this is unacceptable.....this is a america we cannot have the general public protecting themselves from these Gime Dats..

Geee from Miami today:

His Moms words:
You have to look at it from every childs point of view that was raised in the hood, said Harris. You have to understand
how he gonna get his money to have clothes to go to school? You have to look at it from his point-of-view.
But as one commenter said,His relatives should be happy as he was doing something he loved!!
Jafari wasnt even hanging with that young man [the 15 year old].
Both of them should have been.
A gun and a parachute are much alike, because, whether you need one and have it, or need one and don’t have it; you’ll probably never need one again.
Especially since little Jafari was such a good boy. He was turning his life around. Was going to go back to school and on to college. What a shame. </sarcasm>
But as one commenter said,His relatives should be happy as he was doing something he loved!!
Correction he “died doing what he loved”
Because all them urban yutes be using those really short range calibers huh?
Posted this on my FB, and that area does not surprise me when crap like this happens, other than Langley AFB there are parts of it that are a cesspool that I made sure to avoid for I worked there for a couple of jobs years ago.
This would never have happened if only there had been midnight basketball. /sarc
Ah yes, I recall going on robbery sprees in order to buy school clothes.
Not really. It usually involved a trip to JC Penny. Yeah, we got the store brand tennis shoes, no Keds or PF Flyers.
Sorry, sir, but if you have more than twenty dollars in the bank, you can expect the family of this Credit to Humanity to show up at your doorstep with a compliant Ambulance Chaser in tow.
More and more of these CC stories with good outcomes! Sends a message to the scum on the streets!
Pretty sure it’s Hebrew.

You were fortunate. We went to Sals.
Salvation army
They can. It’s called “felony murder.”
That line of thinking would say we need stores where cash isn’t needed. All one does is walk in and pull a gun, and the store fixes you up with whatever you need. No shots ever fired.
I say we already have that, WITHOUT the gun. First of each month, fat gubmint welfah checks, refills for EBT Cards, and everything else imaginable arrive at the mailboxes and EBT Cards in the hood. The folks in the hood is spozed to take THAT money to the store, to pay for what they need. But they cheat, and blow that money on
other stuff.
Then when they’re broke and hungry, they take a gun to the store, or try to rob somebody in the street. And occasionally the folks at the store, or the guy in the street, who already paid for the guy in the hood’s welfare, EBT, Obamaphone, and all that other “free” $#!t he received at the beginning of the month, is tired of being used, and pulls his own gun in self-defense. There is a limit to EVERYTHING.
Jafari wanted some Money
So he pulled a gunny
But was shot by someone
who called him Sonny
