First Uterus Transplant in the United States Fails, Causing Additional Concern for Pro-Lifers

Last fall, LifeNews reported about the Cleveland Clinic’s plans to begin offering the first uterus transplants in the U.S. However, this week, the clinic announced that its first attempt has failed.

USA Today reports the clinic transplanted a uterus into a 26-year-old woman on Feb. 24 but had to remove it as a result of a sudden, unspecified complication. The Cleveland Clinic announced the results of the surgery Wednesday.

“We are saddened to share that our patient, Lindsey, recently experienced a sudden complication that led to the removal of her transplanted uterus,” the Cleveland Clinic said in a statement.

The 26-year-old is the first of ten women who the Ohio medical group says will participate in its research study on uterus transplants, according to the report. The women either were born without a uterus or have problems with their uterus that cause infertility, the report states.

Lindsey also gave a statement to the media on Wednesday: “I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude towards all of my doctors. They acted very quickly to ensure my health and safety. Unfortunately, I did lose the uterus to complications. However, I am doing okay and appreciate all of your prayers and good thoughts.”

She and her husband have three adopted children, but they hoped that the uterine transplant would help them conceive a biological child, Fox 8 Cleveland reports. The young woman said when she was 16 doctors told her that she could never get pregnant, according to the report.

“From that moment on, I’ve prayed that God would allow me the opportunity to experience pregnancy,” Lindsey said.

Clinic physicians said they are trying to figure out the factors that contributed to Lindsey’s complications. They said they plan to continue the study.

The clinic previously said women will be screened for psychological disorders, relationship problems and coercion, as well as for their physical health. They said women also will be informed of the possible risks of the procedure.

In 2014, a Swedish woman made medical history when she gave birth to a child after receiving a womb transplant. Since then, three other Swedish women have given birth after receiving uterus transplants. All were born prematurely. LifeNews reported about the first birth in September 2014.

However, ethicists are conflicted about the nature of uterus transplants.

Me too. I’m sure the patient was old how risky this would be. Good thing they reacted quickly and took it out. With transplants, sometimes they take, other times they continue to be rejected by the body’s immune system. I recall when heart transplants were becoming more common. Back in the 60’s. It took decades of actual empirical experience before the procedure became more predictable and thus safer to attempt.

I think even after uterus transplants have become safer and more routine, there will be unpredictable consequences. The baby born in such a transplanted uterus may have a mixture of DNA from the uterus donor and the birth mother, along, of course with any DNA of the father.
Does this speculation make sense to those of you trained in medicine? As you may have guessed, I am not trained in such procedures at all.

The maternal DNA comes from the mother’s egg, which comes from her ovary, not from the uterus.

Oh. Thank you. I still can’t help but wonder if certain traits won’t be passed on to the baby during the last months of gestation. We’ll find out, I suppose. Meanwhile, I can learn more about basic biology. It’s a fascinating concept, and will change the lives of many women for the better.

Adopting?

No, it’s much better to waste Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars giving a Woman a transplanted Uterus that may or may not do the job.

To think I keep blaming Obamacare for my 66% Increase in my Healthcare Premiums.

You know, she NEEDS it to save her Life. Oh wait...

My Late Mother was right, people have way too much time on their hands.

Nothing wrong with adopting. There are some wannabe parents who strongly desire to pass their genes onto the next generation. Others do not have that need with such urgency. Both options should be considered.

My fear is eventually, they’ll figure out how to transplant uterus’ into men, so faggots can have babies.

So sad for the poor girl :-(

It would be horrible to long for a baby and be physically unable to have one....

I hope they perfect the uterus transplantation...perhaps someday they can create a uterus from a woman’s own tissue using 3D printing techniques :-)

Of course. The transgender activists would demand their right to a uterus.

Did Bruce Jenner ever have the courage to remove his male parts?

I hadn’t thought of that but you are absolutely correct.
Bet it’s not more than 5 years before it happens, at least demanded.
Gotta be a ‘right’ doncha know.

Hopefully whatever nation succeeds the USA will ban all forms of such transplants from receiving any kind of public funds.

If your body is unable to carry a baby there is at least one if not more Very Good Reasons that you should not be having one yourself. Get over your obsession with passing on your not-so-special genes, quit wasting the shipload of money and thousands of man-hours by the medical specialists which could have been used for something far more useful, and go adopt one of the thousands of children left without a family.
