Nearly half of Americans (47%) think gun violence will increase in the U.S. over the next ten years, according to a new CBS News poll released Sunday. Just 14% think gun violence will decrease.
Americans differ on what causes gun violence. The availability of guns and current gun laws is the top answer -- particularly among Democrats -- though lack of gun training, crime, mental health issues, moral values, and other causes are also volunteered by many Americans.
Slightly more than one-third of Americans (38%) lives in a gun-owning household, while 59% do not. The majority of those in gun-owning households (57%) think their guns make their households safer, while those who do not own a gun are more skeptical (with only 22% believing that owning a gun makes you safer).
Protection (31%) and hunting (27%) are the most-sited reasons Americans own guns; and most Americans who live in a gun-owning household own more than one gun (one in five own at least 10).
Most gun owners have had some type of formal training on how to operate their firearms, though most have not had training in the past ten years. One in five has never had formal training.

Very good point. It (and others made here and on other threads related to this subject) make me think of a comment that former Canadian Member of Parliament Garry Brietkreuz made when commenting on the work he and his legislative assistant did that greatly discredited the Liberal government’s 1995 gun registry legislation.
He said that after a while of studying the issue, you get to see that it is no about gun control per se, but instead government (and media, IMHO as well) gone out of control.
cBS's poll result contradicts Gallup's -- and Gallup has been polling since before cBS was in diapers. (They are also -- as is typical -- using "gun violence" as the polling metric, which includes suicides, not just homicides.)
The other issue with this is that the hypothesis is false. Homicides have been decreasing as gun ownership has been increasing, and are as low as they have been in the last 100 years.
Only if the media and federal government are successful in their efforts to keep us divided and are able to foment more hate and resentment.
The democrats get a $1.00 rake-off now for every gun sold over the counter. My God how the money rolls in.
Very stupid poll. What makes them think that people reveal whether they own guns or not? Nobody’s business.
As we cut ourselves loose from Authority greater than ourselves to float with the currents in "worship" of our own worldly rationalism, I'm guessing crime and violence increase.
The problem is we're full of our own malware.
The only fix is a heart reset of our inner software back to the Creator's original Source Code.
Why is it they avoid the low hanging fruit?
The highest percentage of murders are black; therefore...
Special gun laws for minorities, because the gov wants help them!
“With the 2014 FBI numbers having been released, we can see that of the 3,021 whites who were killed by guns, 2,488 were killed by other white people. Similarly, among the 2,451 black victims of gun homicides, 2,205 were committed by other black people.”

Statistics have shown clearly that as firearms ownership rises, crime diminishes.
That’s all well and good with pretty pictorials and all but did they conform to the ersatz polling standards board? LOL! Seems pretty easy to figure out that the with the YUGE increase in firearms sales, the per 100k numbers are still down. Guess that would be asking too much of them huh?
I dunno. It's been on the decrease ever since so many states legalized concealed carry.
How about Black violence, will that increase?
In the inner city, yeah it probably will. Not so much in the suburbs, where all those white legal gun owners are carrying protection.
lol yeah. The assumption that all gun violence is people doing bad.
Defending ones self does everyone a favor and considering the fascistic direction we’re headed, along with the threat of Islam, then yes, I believe we may well see more “gun violence”.
nice graph
Of course it will increase. But not “gun violence”. Violence in general will increase and guns will be a part of that. The lawlessness propagating through the country in this age coupled with the massive immigration will only make things worse overall. But it is disingenuous at the very least to call it “gun violence”.
Only if your ‘government’ continues to ‘rule’ in the same fashion shown in the past 50 years.
Possibly, but not inevitably. Relying on the classic definition of "adage," my guiding rule still holds :
"An armed society is a polite society..."
