The British Navy has fired its first torpedo using a radical new 'brain' fitted to a nuclear submarine.
The Royal Navy's latest and most advanced Astute class submarine, Artful, used the Common Combat System for the first time.
It acts as the submarine's 'brain' – controlling its 'eyes', 'ears' and 'nervous system'.
Artful, the third in the Astute class family, is the first to use this new technology which is now being retrofitted to earlier Astute class submarines.
Work will soon begin to also retrofit Vanguard class submarines.
Paul Beavis, Combat Systems & Support Director for BAE Systems Submarines, said:
'We worked with partners to design an innovative solution that adapts commercial off-the-shelf products to provide the Royal Navy with a step-change in technology - ensuring greater security and resilience at a significantly reduced cost.
'The new command and control system was integrated ahead of schedule so it was ready for the third submarine, rather than the fourth.
It is proving itself to be highly capable and will be rolled out across the rest of the fleet – equipping the Royal Navy with the best, most advanced technology available.'

It really is time we began to carefully distance ourselves from the British. Within 20 years, if not already, there will be captain Mohammed Rahman of the Royal Navy going on patrol with nuclear missiles.

Time will tell. Right now you’re correct, of course, but native birthrates in both countries call into question their long-term sovereignty.
96% of the UK is NOT Muslim, and Muslims have been here since the 50’s. As have Sikhs, Hindus, HK Chinese/Asians and of course black British.
92% of the UK is still white.
Muslim birthrates are expected to level out and then DROP between now and 2050, not rise. Most experts believe the % of Muslims in the UK will never come close to 10%, let alone this nonsense that the UK will be a majority Muslim country. The average I read from demographers is maybe 6%. Too many perhaps, but far from the 50+% some people in the US seem to believe.
The UK is not, PC stupidity aside, a dhimmi nation, a dhimmi people. Nor will it be. Nor is England/UK (not the same thing btw) London. Or even its big cities. Most of the UK is still native white-heavy, where Muslims and those of colour/ethnicity are few and far between. Contrary to US hype.
There is a reason a lot of the UK chat on FR gets me and other freepers either laughing or angry. A lot of Americans seem to believe the most ridiculous nonsense about the UK.
And when we UK and Irish freepers try and state that whilst we have serious issues with Islam and immigration, its far from the nightmare scenario, we get called naïve or deniers. Ironically by people 3000 miles away from the country we actually live in.
1—Americans tend not to know the immigration history to the UK (ie the huge ethnic influx in the 1948-72 period) and seem to think all Muslims turned up at Dover in 1995 or 2000. Islam wasn’t a problem until 1989 and the Rushdie affair. It was pre 1989, black and white issues that caused race problems in the UK (albeit on a far less scale than the US).
2-—Three parts of the UK (Scotland, Wales and NI) have small ethnic pops and even smaller Muslim populations: usually 1% or less. Scotland has 76000 Muslims out of 5.5m.
Wales and NI even less. Even great chunks of England are either Muslim/ethnic free or low.
