Public disclosure; I've always been a strong supporter of Florida senator, Marco Rubio. He is young, energetic and is a solid conservative who believes in American exceptionalism. He's also electable. In poll after poll, he trounces Hillary Clinton in head-to-head matchups. His eloquence and oratory skill is matched only by his ability to broaden the Republican base. He ranks high among women and young people, two key constituent groups necessary for a presidential win. He also appeals to Latinos, a constituent base long ignored by the GOP.
Up until recently, I was certain that Rubio would be the Republican nominee. Like most of the political pundits, I believed that Donald Trump was a passing phenomenon with no staying power; an amusing if not irritating side show. I was dead wrong. Trump has demonstrated an amazing ability to galvanize his core supporters and has also proven to be masterful at manipulating the media.
e has defied conventional wisdom. He's taken on the Pope, Fox News, liberals, Telemundo and just about anyone who stands in his way and it seems that with each confrontation, his popularity soars. The conventional wisdom was that his popularity would peak at 30% and once the weaker candidates - Bush, Christie and Kasich - dropped out, Republicans would coalesce around a solid, mainstream, and most importantly, electable candidate like Rubio.
That did not happen and the Nevada GOP caucus was the turning point. Trump secured a victory with nearly 46% of the vote shattering the previously held belief that he couldn't crack 30%. He won with nearly every single constituent category including Latinos! Rubio came in second but it wasn't even close. In fact, Trump's numbers exceeded the second and third place finishers combined.

Ted Cruz gets my vote if he’s on the Pennsylvania ballot. He has fought for conservative values in his entire legal and political career and exposed the corruption of his own party.
Trump is the king of BS. He was on Fox in 2012 saying he believed in amnesty for illegals and no deportations (see link below). Now he’s magically flip-flopped on this and abortion and everything else he knew he needed to say to win a primary. Since when do people believe they can trust a New York billionaire real estate developer and casino mogul who divorced two wives and wrote in two books that he’s slept with married women?
Trump is shown to be unelectable against Hillary in poll after poll while Cruz and others beat her in poll after poll. Trump’s candidacy is a creation of his brand name and the media coverage it engendered. If Tom Tancredo had run in place of Trump and read the exact same script all the way through, he wouldn’t have gotten the media coverage and wouldn’t have polled on Trump’s level. The media created Trump and once the general election starts, they will destroy him just as easily, with enough oppo research to fill the Indian Ocean.
But those are the voters that trump is attracting
“Trump has demonstrated an amazing ability to galvanize his core supporters.”
And, that is ALL he is galvanizing...
Yet Cruz can’t even do that
Cruz gets my vote (early vote in FL) this Saturday. CRUZ 2016!
I’m not thinking that there are many Reagan Democrats left. Reagan was my first presidential election and I’m now 56. The Reagan Democrats come from my parents’ generation for the most part. That puts them in their 80’s on up.
You are so right about the Reagan Democrats now being elderly senior citizens.
If anyone other than Trump was in his shoes it would have been declared over by now.
Trump wins VA, MA, AL, TN and GA, plus ahead in AR.
The polls are mixed and close. USA today had him beating Hillary two weeks ago. And a five point lead eight months out is meaningless.
Trump is no Reagan. Not even close. He’s basically everything Reagan was not.
It will come down to either Trump or Cruz. We cannot have another Dem in the WH.
Rubio is panicked and hyper and on auto pilot.
Did he take out a huge loan or something because he was freaking out like he was expecting to be knee-capped.
I agree. Cruz was fighting the establishment while Trump was donating to them. Cruz would never donate to Reid or Pelosi or the Clintons
