It was one of Donald Trumps first powerful endorsements: Jerry Falwell Jr., who testified for many evangelical Christians that despite leading a life of excess, the thrice-married, trash-talking mogul was indeed a God-fearing president-in-waiting.
But Falwells plunge into presidential politics did not sit so well with intimates of his late father, Jerry Falwell Sr., nor with some at Liberty University, the Christian college in Virginia founded by the elder Falwell and now led by his son.
Mark DeMoss, who for many years served as chief of staff to Falwell Sr. and considered the televangelist a second father, said in an interview that it was a mistake for Falwell Jr. to endorse Trump. He said the Republican front-runners insult-laden campaign has been a flagrant rejection of the values Falwell Sr. espoused and Liberty promotes on its campus.
Donald Trump is the only candidate who has dealt almost exclusively in the politics of personal insult, DeMoss said. The bullying tactics of personal insult have no defense and certainly not for anyone who claims to be a follower of Christ. Thats whats disturbing to so many people. Its not Christ-like behavior that Liberty has spent 40 years promoting with its students.
DeMoss, a public affairs executive with deep ties throughout the national evangelical community, sits on the board of Liberty University and chairs its executive committee. He said he has discussed his views about Trump personally with Falwell Jr. This appears to be something were just going to disagree on, DeMoss said but otherwise has kept his opinions private.
On Monday, however, with Trump poised for sweeping Super Tuesday victories, including in Virginia and in DeMosss home state of Georgia, DeMoss decided to break his silence in an interview with The Washington Post.

This cult is getting more insane by the minute.
What is all that venom?
Thank you.
Trump hate has driven people to scrape the very bottom of the barrel today.
“What is all that venom?”
Over your head, clearly.
Dog is pissed too !!
I dunno, I thought all of the yuck-yucking among the usual FR suspects over Heidi Cruz’s bout with depression a few years back pretty much found the bottom of that barrel you refer to.
I recognize the words but what is your point? Apparently I was not clear enough for you. Seems like a non direct rant to another freeper. WHY?
“In the last few minutes, Sean Hannity (on radio) has interviewed one of Trump’s kids, who was all upbeat and positive, and Ted Cruz, who sounded desparate and out of his mind spitting bile and venom. I think one reason many Chistians are shying away from Cruz is because they do not consider going around with one’s head exploding with hatred and rage to be Christ-like behavior.”
Oh please. I heard it too. Cruz was simply stating the inconsistencies of of what Trump is saying and where he has stood. He was “not spitting bile and venom”.
You act as if Trump has been some perfect gentleman. He has fire the first shots on every candidate. He fired the first shots on Jeb!, he fired the first shots on Carson (said he looked like a pedophile), he fired the first shots on Cruz. He made fun of Fiorina’s face. The rude and nasty guy in this race has been Trump. He’s an awful man. Yet not one of his flock will admit this.
Cruz is only trying to fight back. Trump started that war with his character smears on Cruz.
I guess you don’t grasp irony very well. The quotes destroy the man’s platitudinous and erroneous doctrine.
Ditto that. I graduated from Liberty’s law program. I guarantee the law group there is not enthused about a Trump presidency.
Peace,
SR
“Jerry Falwell Jr.s Trump endorsement draws objections from his late fathers confidant”
Wow! That convinced me to write in Jeb! for president.
Thanks, buddy.
Did WaPo dedicate an entire issue to Trump Bashing today?
Donald is busy licking over the tables of the money changers (the DC political class). Very Christlike
Should read kicking.
Perhaps they prefer Yeb or Marco
Yea but what about his late father’s confidant’s second cousin? That’s what I want to know, seriously. I won’t decide until I find out dammit!
Yeah, I know a woman who’s all for Cruz and against Trump for the coarse language. Today Cruz said “Damn it!”
And my brother didn’t like my college boyfriend. So?
Falwell Jr. would have benefited from a few years in the military. Falwell would have as well.
I don’t think there are enough Evangelicals left to make a difference.
I say that as a very conservative evangelical who thinks Jerry Falwell went soft in his old age.
