Chris Rock came out swinging in one of the best opening monologues in years and took on the diversity controversy from the get-go at the 88th Academy Awards. Last night also saw Brie Lawson win Best Actress, Leonardo DiCaprio snag Best Actor in his fifth nomination, Alejandro G. Iñárritu was named Best Director and Spotlight won Best Picture. With all that, the Oscars themselves had a not such a great night with a 23.1/37 in metered market results.
Thats down 6% from the 24.6/39 that the ceremony got last year in early results from the 56 markets across the country. That 2015 Neil Patrick Harris hosted Oscars were matched with the 2011 Oscars for the third worst the Academy Awards has done in MM ratings since the last time Rock fronted the gig in 2005 only 2009s 23.3 and 2008s 21.9 were lower.
The 2005 Oscars were the best the show has done in the past decade with a 30.1/43 MM rating. That high has also remained true in later numbers for the show. With Million Dollar Baby winning Best Picture, the 2005 Oscars ended up with a massive 42.14 million viewers and 19.6 million among adults 18-49. In both categories, that was a dip from 2004s results. Compared to the last time Rock hosted 11-years ago, last nights 8:30 midnight show was down 23% in metered market results.
Last years Oscars ended up with 37.3 million total viewers and an 11.0/26 rating in the key demo. That was the lowest performance among adults 18-49 since 2008 and the lowest viewership since 2009. We will update with more numbers from last nights Oscars as they come in.
DiCaprio could have ended all the racist hatred last night by telling the audience that he “identifies” as being black.
Just another entertainment group congratulating itself. Significance to the rest of us? Nothing.
What amazes be is the PC group think, not a brain cell among these liberals.
#OscarsSoBoring
Wait ‘til they see how low the ratings go with the future racial Oscar set-asides.
Mr Rock,
Follow the Money.
It was terrible. He even yelled Black Lived Matter sr the end.
Does anyone watch this show? I haven’t in decades, seriously, decades.
I do remember a time when it was a must-watch, you had to watch it so you could talk about it the next day. That was, maybe, half a century ago. These days, who cares?
The Grammy's went thru this in the late 80's and early 90's - every award went to rappers. The next 20 years after poor ratings they stopped the charade and attempted to reward musicians again.

Leonardo DiCaprio uses Oscars speech to address climate change
This was the last year for the real Oscar presentations. Starting next year, it will become the Affirmative Action Academy Awards. A predetermined number of awards will be set aside for minority recipients whether they were earned or not.
Its been political since Sasheen Little Feather
A long time
And before that yes Hollywood was infiltrated by Commies
I haven’t enjoyed it since Carson
Don’t go to their Leftist movies, don’t watch their mutual masturbation fests.
Hmm black whining is the 'best'? How pathetic.
Oscars were on? Who knew?
Nobody’s going to watch a 3 and half hour show to see the 2o minutes where they give away the only awards anybody cares about when they can just watch that part on YouTube the next day.
