That's a good point — Trump is much like Herbert Hoover. Hoover was a "progressive Republican" (he had been a member of Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party) who signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in 1930. Based on his experience in private enterprise, he set his primary goal as the elimination of the many inefficiencies in government operations.

Smoot-Hawley was a major contributing factor to the Great Depression; can't we learn from history this time?

Herbert Hoover's lasting legacy was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was elected in reaction to the economic disaster of the Hoover years. So, in direct reaction to Hoover's mistakes, the US moved staunchly to the left for 50 years.

If Trump is elected President, I dread the President who comes after Trump -- the US will elect a socialist to pick up the pieces because they'll blame conservatism for the Trump disaster. And that will be the end of the free market in America, the end of the America that we once knew.
