Sen. Harry Reid on Tuesday warned that Sen. Chuck Grassley will go down as the "most obstructionist" Senate Judiciary Committee chairman in history for denying a hearing to a Supreme Court nominee from President Obama.
The Democratic leader said Grassley (R-Iowa) would eclipse chairmen of the panel during the 1960s who blocked civil rights legislation.
"Hard to comprehend, but it appears Sen. Grassley's going to follow through on this plan and go down in history as the most obstructionist Judiciary chair in the history of this country," Reid said.
"That says a lot, because we knew about Judiciary Committee chairs during the civil rights era," Reid said. "I can't imagine that Sen. Grassley, who I've served with in Congress for more than three decades -- is this the legacy that he wants?"
Reid's remarks referenced but did not name Sen. James Eastland, a conservative Democrat from Mississippi who was a renowned opponent of racial integration in the 1960s. The Judiciary Committee became a "graveyard for civil rights legislation" under his watch, according to a historical summary on the Senate's website.
In 1964, then-Majority Leader Mike Mansfield (D-Mont.) brought the landmark Civil Rights Act directly to the floor to circumvent Eastland.
Reid and his top deputy, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), were besides themselves with anger and frustration Tuesday after Senate Republicans unequivocally rejected their calls for a hearing on the Supreme Court vacancy.
Democrats are focusing their fire on Grassley in hopes of moving him and that he might then in turn put pressure on the GOP leadership.
McConnell on Tuesday said he would not even meet with Obama's nominee .
Reid accused Republicans of destroying the fabric of the Senate by refusing to even consider President Obama's nominee to the high court.
"They're threatening to abandon the Senate's responsibilities. It's what Donald Trump and Ted Cruz want," Reid said, referring to the leading Republican presidential candidates. "Remember Trump said, 'Delay, delay, delay.'"
Can Harry Reid actually lash out at anything now? He looks like the psycho’s alter ego (mother) in the movie Psycho.
Everyone should remember to make sure Grassley’s stand here is not for nothing and VOTE FOR THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE IN NOVEMBER, whoever it is.
Harry Reid is one of those men who speaks with a forked tongue so often that he has not a clue when he is a lying scumbag. The History of Reid’s obstructionism is legendary and obscene (check out the name Estrada for judgeship), but because the enemy owns the media this man’s perfidy will never be enumerated. He is a filthy liar and a socialist ruler in his black Mormon heart. He has a temple recommend, BTW.
If Grassley finds himself getting a little weak in the knees by this POS Bully I suggest he ring up the Donald to sort Reid out.
Our Bully!
Go Trump
BUSTED! Watch Biden in '92 Say Senate Should REFUSE to Hold Hearings On Bush SCOTUS Nominees
Dingy Harry apparently — and conveniently — forgets 2001 when Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords, a RINO to the nth degree, got the vapors over some perceived slight and left the GOP to become an independent, thus throwing the Senate to the Dims; at which point the new Chairman of the Senate Judicial Committee, that loathsome Leaky Leahy, came right out and announced that ALL of GWB’s judicial nominees — at any level — were “Dead On Arrival.”
My God, how I hate Dims.
Damn, if only Harry could of worked in Nazi or Hitler some how..............
So what would be the actual effect of leaving Scalia’s seat open until next year?
Every decision that would have been a 5 to 4 win for the liberal wing of the Court will instead be a 5 to 3 win for the liberal wing of the Court. The only cases that will be affected are those that would have been a 5 to 4 win for the conservative wing of the Court. Those cases will now be deadlocked 4 to 4. The effect of a deadlock is that court of appeals decision will stand.
So the only cases that will actually be affected are those in which a 5 to 4 conservative majority would have overturned the court of appeals decision. No other cases will be affected one way or the other. Those few cases can always be reheard next term.
What this is really about is that liberals are giddy with excitement over the sudden unexpected opportunity to flip decisions that would have been 5 to 4 wins for the conservative wing into 5 to 4 wins for the liberal wing. Well there are still three 80 year old Justices left on the Court. So whether Scalia’s seat is filled or not, the next President is going to determine the direction of the Supreme Court for the next 30 years.
In the immortal words of Joe Biden, “once the political season is underway — and it is — action on a Supreme Court nomination must be put off until after the election campaign is over. That is what is fair to the nominee and essential to the process.”
We had some with balls on our side to which they’d laugh and take it as an honor, a measure of success against a pissed off liberal.
Nowadays our guys crap their pants and are afraid the uniparty won’t invite them to the next social functiom.
Not even 11%.
Up until Jeffords defected it was a tie in the senate. So McCain decided that every committee should be equal with co-chairs. After Jeffords left McCain wasn’t even a co-chair anymore. hee hee
Exactly, no one should believe a thing he says.
Grassly should tell Dingy and the rest of the slime balls that what he’s doing is exactly what the Rats would do if the situation was reversed. And they have said as much.
Someone should ask Harry if he remembers how to spell Nuclear option!
Thanks, I called and voiced my support. Voice mail at this time of day. I appreciate the information.
Reid can’t believe the Republicans are actually standing firm. I can hardly believe it myself.
Sorry, Harry. The GOP is simply following a long-standing precedent established by Dem-Socialists.
Yeah, why would the Pubbies, who are spineless be able to even lift themselves to a standing position.
Gee, didn’t Josh Earnest just say Grassley’s decision is “unprecedented?”
