Guantanamo Bay: Obama in bid to close controversial prison

The White House has revealed its plans for closing the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility, one of the president's long-standing goals.

The Pentagon has proposed transferring the remaining 91 detainees to their home countries or to US military or civilian prisons.

But Congress is deeply opposed and expected to block the move.

The prison costs $445m (£316m) to run annually and closing it was an early promise from President Barack Obama.

He told reporters on Tuesday the prison undermines national security.

"This is about closing a chapter in our history," said Mr Obama. "It reflects the lessons we've learned since 9/11 - lessons that must guide our nation going forward."

The Pentagon outlined four main components of the plan:

transfer 35 detainees to foreign countries who have been designated to do so do periodic reviews of remaining detainees to see if their detention is still necessary continue to use legal tools to deal with remaining detainees working with Congress to establish a location in the US to hold detainees who will not go to foreign countries

It estimates the move would save up to $180m (£128m) per year in cost savings.

The president, who will complete his second and final term in January, said it was important not to pass the problem on to his successor.

"Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values. It undermines our standing in the world. It is viewed as a stain on our broader record of upholding the highest standards of rule of law.''

President Obama has tried for years to close Guantanamo. He and his deputies say that it hurts the reputation of the US and that militants use "the infamous orange jumpsuit", as one senior administration official described it, as a recruiting tool.

the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility

There is nothing "controversial" about it.

I have no doubt Obama plans to turn all of GITMO back to Cuba as well.

Watch for his announcement during his visit there next month

This is all over the news.
I got alerts on my phone from CNN, Fox, and local tv.
So the original post just happens to be from a foreign source.

His speech on this was among the most blithering pieces of nonsense ever uttered. Ask me if I’m surprised. Suddenly 0bama is worried about saving money.

Obama will only know about this when he reads it in our paper or hears on our media. That’s why no one other than foreigners will report it.

Doesn’t look like anyone in the leadership positions now want to.

Who sees controversy in locking up some really violent, evil hombres and keeping them from the rest of the world?

If he does, President Trump will re-open it and put Sheriff Joe in charge. Wonder how the muzzies will like pink prayer rugs?

And given the bad deal Obama made with Cuba, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump will reinstate some sanctions. Or at least get them to pay for re-opening Gitmo.

When all of Obama’s treachery is exposed it will ruin whatever is leff of the D party after Bernie and Hillary are done with it.

Oh, I see...The “infamous orange jumpsuit” is NOT a recruiting tool for terrorists if the prisoners wear it in the USA, only at Gitmo...I see....

What a POS...

I guess this is his plan to support Hillary. He’s taking away the awkward answer she’d have to lie her ass off about in response to a question about it.

Apparently, Obama isn’t going to throw her under the bus. They’re depending on the machine to give her the delegates and for her to protect his America-hating Muslim agenda.

No one but Trump says they’ll look at and likely prosecute her (or others that it might entail, certainly not RUBIO with his illegal invasion agenda).

Wake up people. He reintroduced ‘illegal’ into the national narrative - everywhere. He brought ‘Muslim immigrants as a clear and present dangers to the forefront.

He may be brash and bold and off putting, but at least he says what he thinks, largely without an Obama telepromptr, night after night at sold out venues all over this country.

I like Trump and voted for him this morning, but I ardently hope Cruz bests Rubio in Georgia, too. I hope at some point Ted and Donald can combine their respective talents to take this country back from the destroyers and liars.

He told reporters on Tuesday the prison undermines national security.

Obama doubtless sees no correlation between dropping crime rate and increasing incarceration in the US. It’s a connection he’d rather not deal with. The notion that Guantanamo detention increases the threat of terrorist attacks flows from the same mindset, ie, self-defense just antagonizes the offender.
