Putin pulled off a brilliant piece of diplomacy and pretty much said he backed Kurdistan. The Syrian Kurds then switched over to Russia's side and opened an office in Moscow - sort of a future embassy.

The Russians twisted Assad's arm in accepting this because the Kurds would straddle the Turkish-Syrian border and serve as a buffer state and cut off the Turkish pipeline to the Syrian rebels.

Kurds are not ISIS so yes Putnam is protecting the Kurds.
