GOP(e) elders want poorly performing candidates to quit

The South Carolina primary is poised to dramatically alter the Republican nomination contest, winnowing and clarifying the largest and most rambunctious GOP field in decades.

Many in the party's upper echelons have grown impatient with their splintered field of center-right, mainstream contenders and say they intend to put pressure on whichever candidate falls short of third place on Saturday night to quit.

"South Carolina will reshape the race," said Scott Reed, the chief political strategist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

"Only the top three finishers will have a true narrative to continue down the road."

South Carolina has a long history of defining the course of Republican nomination fight. George W. Bush's win over John McCain there marked a turning point in the bitter 2000 contest, as did Ronald Reagan's 1980 win over George H.W. Bush.

"South Carolina has always been pivotal," McCain said in an interview on Friday, recalling his difficult defeat.

Looks like the pressure is on to get behind one person to strengthen the establishment.

And they would appreciate it if all the other candidates except Jethro or Mario would quit too.

Well if they succeed this will help Rubio and Cruz Trump benefits from a fragmented field.

Seems like they actually want Bush out at this point. Newt kind of sums it up best.

“The donor community is desperate to get someone out to focus on stopping Trump,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who won the South Carolina primary in 2012.

I admit to mixed feelings...for some continuing is futile at best.

On the other hand, it can never be wrong to tell the "party elders" to stuff themselves.

This is a dishonest article. Not one person quoted in the article said they wanted anyone to quit. A few just questioned how many candidates could remain in the race.

John McCain attacked the primary process.

It is clearly only the wish of the author and Politico that candidates drop out.

Not sure why some are so upset about the article. I love watching the establishment cry into their cornflakes, so I shared it. :)

Scott Reed, the chief political strategist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

That right there says a lot with what’s wrong with this country. Every special interest has a political strategist.

The COC is apparently ready to put all of their illegal-immigrants-for-American-jobs eggs in either the Rubio or Kasich basket.

So McCain and Romney should have backed out too since they ran nothing campaigns barely even presenting an option vs. the RATS. Those were campaigns built to lose.

““The donor community is desperate to get someone out to focus on stopping Trump,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who won the South Carolina primary in 2012.”

Indeed. the GOPe “Anybody but Trump” chorus lineup has been getting louder and more insistent by the day.

Notice that Cruz is an acceptable GOPe choice as the chorus NEVER sings “anybody but Trump or Cruz”.

They should know how it works. Mittens couldn’t get much above 35-36 percent until after the race was decided, but that was enough to win virtually every primary.
