Donald Trump in Triage Mode After Shocking Conservatives With Health Care Comments

He has broken with many Republicans on taxing the rich, threatening trade wars and keeping Planned Parenthood alive. On Friday, Donald J. Trump faced criticism for an even bolder act of conservative heresy: embracing the core tenet of the Affordable Care Act.

Mr. Trump has to date offered only bits and pieces of his health agenda, generally presenting a vow to repeal "Obamacare" and replace it with "something great."

In a town-hall meeting hosted by CNN on Thursday night, he shared some more expansive views on the subject, and unlike most Republicans he did not call for removing the individual mandate that requires Americans to have health insurance.

Asked how people with pre-existing medical conditions would purchase insurance if the health law and the mandate were eliminated, Mr. Trump said, "I like the mandate."

"So here's where I'm a little bit different," he continued. "I don't want people dying on the streets."

Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Trump backed away from his remarks, proclaiming himself to be the fiercest opponent of the health law. It was the latest example of a candidate who has been impervious to inconsistencies again emerging unscathed from a misstep that would probably be damaging to anyone else....

The SCOTUS is obviously a huge question mark. I do know that Cruz would make great choices there. 20 years ago, that would have been a huge plus, because the Left has used the Court to impose on us what it cannot do electorally. They are getting close to being able to do it electorally by importing a new electorate. We might reach a point where a POTUS has to tell the SCOTUS to try to enforce their rulings.

remember that FR is NOT the world. Each time it thinks it is the world, the actual world teaches it a lesson that it is not.

Observation with which I fully agree. We learned, or should have learned, such a lesson in 2012, for example.

But there is another fella by the name of James Madison who was instrumental in giving me the right to judge and to preach about it and he helped enshrine that right in the First Amendment. So I take the right to judge seriously, even when the odds are daunting as they are now concerning the probable nomination of Donald Trump, and I take it as a duty to soldier on because right and wrong matters, sometimes even more than poll numbers.

You might be right. Trump might build the wall, he might not; the others most certainly will not. He’s a chance. Otherwise, it’s all over, unless the “natural conservative” blacks and hispanics suddenly start voting for limited government. I see that as less likely than Trump building a wall.

Even if he does build the wall, pay close attention to what Trump keeps saying. He says the illegals will go home, but then will come back legally. In order words, they'll still get amnesty, just in a more roundabout fashion.

It’s not exactly heartening to admit to being what amounts to a single-issue voter, but I guess I am. I look at the very honest way the Left is trying to change the population of this country, and I wonder why there isn’t any opposition to it. They are very upfront about it.

For 8 months Trumps turned this insider political big top on it’s head. He’s attacked from every direction, from the top down, all the right enemies. Do you really think they forgot to dig under his fingernails? But you’re free to examine it further. Trumps not top secret. He’s been a very public guy for decades. If ya have something earth shattering, you best get it out there.

Yes, that’s very discouraging, but his position is the strongest by far. My hope is that he will drag the range of what is possible in a better direction. The Left is importing a new population for the country, and aren’t really hiding their intentions. The things that conservatives claim to hold dear only exist in certain populations. The Left knows this quite well.

I agree. It scares the crap out of me, because that is the definition of a constitutional crisis. I know its been done before and the Republic survived, but I’m not so sure this time around there will be enough Patriots left in Congress to back the President in your scenario. Despite the Republican’s recent refusals to use their own leverage, Congress does control the purse strings. If a President finds him or herself on the other side of both SCOTUS and Congress I fail to see how he or she can successfully proceed enforcing the border. The best answer is to make sure we elect someone that will protect and expand the conservative majority in the SCOTUS and Congress.
