San Bernardino Shooter's Apple ID Passcode Changed While in Government Possession, Apple Says
ABC News ^ | 2/19/2016 | Jack Date

The Apple ID passcode for the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone was changed less than 24 hours after authorities took possession of the device, a senior Apple executive said today.

And Apple could have recovered information from the phone had the Apple ID passcode not been changed, Apple said.

If the phone was taken to a location where it recognized the Wi-Fi network, such as the San Bernardino shooters' home, it could have been backed up to the cloud, Apple suggested. ... The auto reset was executed by a county information technology employee, according to a federal official. Federal investigators only found out about the reset after it had occurred and that the county employee acted on his own, not on the orders of federal authorities, the source said.

Hey, Dim, I have an excellent idea for you. Right up your dark alley.

Produce handguns thathave proper registrion marks and look legal in every way, but with a “specail safety feature” that will allow it to fire completely untraceable ammunition, made by someone else. That way, the people who want to use it legally can have one and all the scumbags who want “privacy” can have lockout and “special ammo” for illegal use! Huh? Good one, don’t you think? You could probably make a killing on it just selling licenses to the ammo makers for sale to the mass murderer crowd. The jihadis world wide will buy them as fast as you can produce them...and you won’t be responsible for any of it!

Sure, people don’t mind at all. The Billion transactions we do per day... Who cares if they are secure! Or even between the right parties.

You know what I fnd fascinating? The prior head of the NSA actually agrees with me on the value and importance of encryption. Why don’t you watch his interview.

As to the name calling?... What was that for? Or perhaps a lawyer sees ignorance as a 4 letter word? As they always have to portray being in the know? Well in my line of work we are ignorant to new attacks and system breaches at times, mine is an ever changing and dynamic environment not based on 100s of years of history.

The very fact that the poll identify them as not having enough information to,decide is the very definition of ignorant.

Sadly, I am sure that is just how you think.

...and thinking that way and in that pseudo intellectual disdain for people is why you are an asshole. And I think that is the very definition of an asshole. So I guess we are both using our own vernacular...

Let me help: I even Googled it to make sure there wasn’t a special version for the “Law and Order” folks.

Ignorant -
lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about something in particular.
“they were ignorant of astronomy”
synonyms: without knowledge of, unaware of, unconscious of, oblivious to, incognizant of, unfamiliar with, unacquainted with, uninformed about, ill-informed about, unenlightened about, unconversant with, inexperienced in/with, naive about, green about

But I am continually in awe of your pronounced if not redacted vocabulary!

Asshole: An outlet for noxious airs, unwanted and mostly useless materials and sounds.

I am in awe of nothing about you, alas. Sorry.

I believe in the 4th Amendment but not at the expense of the majority of innocent persons privacy. The government has the phone, they should be the ones to write the code and to exploit the device and keep that as a secret for themselves, with no internal information from Apple. Yes it’s more work... So they best pay folks who can get that done for them.

I believe as a country and as a people as a whole we are better off with the most secure end-to-end encryption.

The few bad seeds, and the scum of the earth shouldn’t force us to lose our individual liberty.

But I’m glad to understand your pov, let’s get this to the legislative branch and have the citizenry decide what they want to do.

Alternative definition:

asshole; slang
someone being arrogant, rude, obnoxious, or just a total dickhead.

Perhaps you should change your tag line FRiend.

Just replace Liberal with jessduntno.

With your attitude and behavior it certainly seems to fit.

“With your attitude and behavior it certainly seems to fit.”

Well, coming from a guy who is bent on destroying the Constitution, while I have been defending it, I find that advice a little curious...It seems like a noxious bit of noise and odor though.

“God bless you Jess, I know you believe you have the best of intentions at heart. Perhaps you will someday see that I had the same, just from a different perspective and from a different skillset than you.”

Your greatest failure as a human. You have no idea what my skill set is. Just that yours is somehow superior. You are an ass.

Well congratulations on not cursing. Jess there could be hope for you yet.

And I see what you did there, very witty! Odor? Noise?... That was funny!

I’m sad that you don’t know me in person, you just may have a different view. I’m in Northern Virginia about 17 miles west of the Cess Pool called DC. If You get out this way I will buy you a beer and hope to hear the inside story and history of your past and hope to glean more of what you can share from your experiences. I’m sure you have very legitimate reasons on why you feel so strongly on this.

I can’t fault anyone for holding their line, even if we differ on opinions.

Have a good night.

Yo, more “Feelings.” It’s for the children! Yet again when your emotional
content is removed from the post nothing of substance is left.

“I’m sure you have very legitimate reasons on why you feel so strongly on this.”

If you had curbed your condescension early on, you would have known my reasons, but you were too busy trying to dominate the conversation with the ignorant little people. It’s true. But I’m sure I am not the first to tell you all of this. You have a filter that can not be penetrated because you are so sure of your “skill set” which, in itself, is a very cold and impersonal way of distancing yourself from the reality of what others might feel. And yes, I have some excellent reasons for feeling this strongly. I am a Constitutionalist and a strict originalist. We’re a vanishing breed. I think you would be quite surprised. Fare well.

Oh well it seems that your ire extends to others but, with less class and more vitriol. Swearing and name calling is more appropriate on the lefty HP. On FR most of us try to maintain a bit more courtesy towards our fellows.

Looks like the slippery slope some chicken littles were worried about isn’t that imaginary:

” A court filing unsealed in a Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday revealed that the federal government wants to compel Apple to help it crack more than just the iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino terrorists.”

The 15 other phones the feds are after are probably related to other cases where terrorists are threatening children. /s

So much for the “its just in this very serious terrorist case” meme.

I’m very sorry you have had to stoop to such filth and name calling.

When the law is on your side, pound on the law. When the facts are on your side, pound on the facts. When neither the law nor the facts are on your side, pound on the table.

They want the information on the phone. They don’t care how Apple gets it.

Wrong. The order has all sorts of specifics about exactly what security protections (erase after too many wrong PIN guesses, delay between PIN guesses, PIN entry only manually via touchpad) the government is demanding that Apple remove.

That is indeed a pity. Scalia had great respect for the Fourth Amendment, and none whatsoever for bureaucratic toadies who try to undermine it.

Yeah, I tend to get too emotional about 14 dead innocent people.

How do you feel about the millions of people who use encryption to protect themselves from thieves? Protect their lives and identities from oppressive dictators around the world? From unwarranted spying by our own govt. that swore they weren't doing it? You put a lot of stock into 4th A. protections, but Vlad Putin doesn't GAF about those, nor do the Chinese or any other foreign power, nor do criminal hackers who have stolen US govt. data repeatedly.

The real pity is that, in your shortsightedness, you fail to realize this will do nothing to stop the criminals and terrorists. Virtually unbreakable encryption programs already exist that duplicate Apple's built in methods, such as PGP. It is free, simple, and already widespread and doesn't depend on Apple or any other hardware manufacturer.

This will, however, open up a method for breaking into the casual, everyday user's private data, their contacts, banking, financial communications and more. That you cannot see that is the true intent of the FBI's tactics, after seeing the same crap pulled under the Patriot Act, makes me wonder at your naivete.
