With the mosquito-borne Zika virus continuing to spread through Central and South America, Pope Francis said today that contraception could be seen as "the lesser of two evils" if women are concerned about having children with the birth defect microcephaly.
The Zika virus is usually mild, but has been associated with a rise of the alarming birth defect, characterized by an abnormally small head and brain, often leading to significant developmental delays.
The pope compared the situation to a decree issued by Pope Paul VI, which said nuns in Africa could use contraception due to the threat of rape.

Calling deeply held and considered opinions “ridiculous” = scorn.
Zika is a UN manipulated stalking course to get the acceptance of abortion and contraception by the Catholic Church. In the state in Brazil where they identified it, it tuned out that of the thousand or so cases of supposed microcephaly, only 380 or so were actual microcephaly, and of those, only 14 mothers had Zika antibodies (indicating that they had had the disease). Microcephaly is usually caused by maternal drug and alcohol use durong pregnancy - fetal alcohol syndrome, in other words - and this Brazilian state has a huge problem with drug and alcohol abuse among the poor. Frankie should have spent some time telling the UN to work on drug and alcohol programs and telling Brazil to get its economic act together, but then, he wouldn’t be the darling of the media if he did that.
“Most Catholics use birth control. Everyone knows that”
...and most Catholics are going to Hell. Narrow is the path and few will find it.
“Most Catholics use birth control. Everyone knows that.”
Which would make them sinners, like everyone else on the planet.
The church puts forth what it believes is the better way of life for humanity. It doesn’t usually advocate “next best” alternatives.
However, to avoid tyranny (as happens sometimes throughout history), it stresses tolerance and forgiveness as much as the rule following.
In other words, given two extremes of lifestyles, say a saintly couple that keeps sex between themselves and within marriage and a pair like Bill and Hillary, would you say that each are morally equivalent, or is one way perhaps better, on a spiritual basis, than the other?
The church has picked one.
Thank you for the post.
Someone should remind Dope Francis that the lesser of two evils is still evil.
Not surprising, considering his collusion with population control advocates (e.g. Jeffrey Sachs and Hans Schellnhuber) in the preparation and presentation of his Green Encyclical.
OMG! Pope Frankie is a certifiable idiot.
So-—nobody in Brazil should have babies for the next—like 10 years!!!
Well said.
The purpose of marital intercourse is both unitive and procreative.
Unitive—drawing the couple closer and closer together in a beautiful intimate relationship blessed by God.
Procreative—sealing the marriage with the blessing of children.
Only the most generous of modern couples understand these principles and live by them, much to their delight, comfort, and happiness.
BINGO!!!
The pope used the term “lessor of two evils”? So, I guess it’s okay to hang out with a demon if your only choice is a demon or Satan himself.
I agree...
You believe everyone who uses contraceptives is going to Hell?
Show me in the Bible where Jesus or any of His apostles said that...

As they say in Chicago, Papa, “Never let a crisis go to waste.”
No, the reporter used that phrase in his question. That’s why we don’t trust news headlines to give the entire story. This article also does not, and even the pope’s words are somewhat labyrinthine.
If you’re seriously interested (which I don’t imply you should be), check out the actual transcript of the plane conversation.
My takeaway from the jumble was that the pope was saying it’s OK to avoid pregnancy if Zika is a concern.
For Catholics “avoid pregnancy” means abstain from marital relations - not using the pill.
