The purpose was for Ds and indy’s to see Trump. He’s already running for the general election and trying to appeal to non-Rs. Rs aren’t going to vote for a commie or criminal. If Trump can pull in some Ds and most indy’s he got it locked up.
Don’t forget that a lot of “R’s” also aren’t going to vote for an idiot like Trump.
