US veteran's children taken away over his use of medical marijuana

When Raymond Schwab talks about his case, his voice teeters between anger and sadness.

"People who don't understand the medical value of cannabis are tearing my family apart," says the Kansas father and US veteran, who has a prescription for marijuana in neighboring Colorado, where it is legal.

Nine months ago, Schwab tried to move to Colorado to grow medical marijuana for fellow veterans. While he and his wife were there preparing for the move, the state of Kansas took five of their children, ages 5 to 16, into custody on suspicion of child endangerment, ensnaring his family in interstate marijuana politics.

Someday, a strict anit-gun State will seize the kids of parents wishing to move to a pro-gun State. Then we’ll have some fun.

I did 8 years 1968-1976. Can I claim PTSD for that service along with later alcoholism and drug abuse as a 'reason' to get a prescription?

If you've been diagnosed with PTSD, you rightly ought to be able to. I'm not aware of any evidence that marijuana is effective in treating alcoholism and drug abuse.

Someone thinking a stoner with mental issues might not be the ideal parent?

So everyone who is not an "ideal parent" should have their kids taken away?

I don’t use either

I’m only addicted to split tail poison

But I think booze is more destructive but it’s also easier to enjoy

Pot makes some people have panic attacks

“Medical” marijuana is but a come-on for its overall legalization.

I doubt there is a “doctor” within those states allowing it who has ever refused anyone their “prescription”.

You’re right there is a lot of abuse going on. But there’s also abuse with legal prescription drugs. MJ has been proven to help with medical needs for cancer, epilepsy and pain. A lot of prescription pain meds have worse side affects but then the drug companies would be out a lot of money. The alcohol association lobbies to keep it illegal because they don’t want to be out a lot of money.

“Because my booze is superior to your herb!”

From a strictly medical perspective, it makes no sense to make marijuana illegal when alcohol is legal. Alcohol causes a physiological addiction (you can die from alcohol withdrawal), whereas "addiction" to THC is strictly a psychological craving.

Excessive use of either is bad for the brain and nervous system, but alcohol use is indisputably worse. I think that the disparity boils down to the fact that alcohol and tobacco have powerful lobbies while THC does not, yet the "war on drugs" is hypocritically disguised as a public health issue.

Someone who goes home and consumes a 6 pack of beer every night isn't an ideal parent either, even though it's perfectly (and arbitrarily) legal. Would you support the government taking custody of his children in that case?

In Michigan, 5,873 patients are registered to use medical marijuana. More than 1,800 applications have been denied. - http://www.annarbor.com/news/top-9-fast-facts-about-the-states-medical-marijuana-program/

Well, I’ll have to grant you Michigan. Though by the picture of the guy selling, I’d still say that the real goal of the movement is to have pot legalized across the board.

I’m not necessarily totally opposed to it, but do think it can still be dangerous, and particularly so for teens.

Most likely be regulated like alcohol.
A person can make small amounts of wine or beer or spirits, people will beable to grow a few plants.

Well, I'll have to grant you Michigan. Though by the picture of the guy selling,

The photo is from California, btw.

I'd still say that the real goal of the movement is to have pot legalized across the board.

You're reading a lot into a rock t-shirt with a rainbow on it.

I'm sure some people who support medical marijuana want recreational legalization - but that doesn't negate the medical usefulness of marijuana.

I'm not necessarily totally opposed to it, but do think it can still be dangerous,

So can alcohol - and cars. A free society's answer is to make sure knowledge of the dangers is readily available, then leave adults to make their choices.

and particularly so for teens.

No state that has legalized recreational marijuana has included teens - just as teens can't legally buy alcohol.
