Feb. 10, 2006A former top CIA official said the Bush administration used prewar Iraq intelligence selectively to make the public case for war after having already decided to invade the country, the Washington Post reported today (see GSN, Feb. 8).
“Official intelligence on Iraqi weapons programs was flawed, but even with its flaws, it was not what led to the war,” Paul Pillar, national intelligence officer for the Near East and South Asia from 2000 to 2005, wrote in the upcoming issue of the journal Foreign Affairs. The administration “went to war without requesting — and evidently without being influenced by — any strategic-level intelligence assessments on any aspect of Iraq.”
“It has become clear that official intelligence was not relied on in making even the most significant national security decisions, that intelligence was misused publicly to justify decisions already made, that damaging ill will developed between [Bush] policy-makers and intelligence officers, and that the intelligence community's own work was politicized,” Pillar wrote.
Pillar, now a security studies professor at Georgetown University, was considered the CIA’s top counterterrorism analyst prior to his retirement. He was responsible for coordinating assessments on Iraq from throughout the U.S. intelligence community, according to the Post.
Trump is intentionally resurrecting the “Bush lied” talking points for the Democrats, just in time for another election. What the hell does this have to do with any issues in 2016 and frankly, nothing to do with Jeb Bush. (I am not a Jeb Bush supporter)
This is an unforgivable comment by Trump, we can argue and debate the what if’s of going into Iraq but any Republican that believes that G.W. Bush did not keep us safe after 911 or who in anyway believes that truther crap about 911 is insane and won’t ever get my vote. Trump is a lunatic period.
I am not a Bush fan. In fact I now detest him because he keeps his mouth shut as Obama destroys us. I am not sure if he is collusion or if he is merely being blackmailed and threatened but he has given Obama free reign to destroy us and make him a laughing stock.
Even without the WMD having a foot in the ME was a good idea. Look what happened when Obama pulled us out. If we would have stayed how different history would be. Obama destroyed all that was fought for with life, limb and lots of our money. He is the culprit. He is evil incarnate.
To those who actually were in the intelligence community during the period in question, “Bush Lied” is a shortened version of: “Bush really wanted to get Saddam because Saddam had tried to kill his father, and everyone fell for intelligence generated by an Iranian agent provocateur who was able to also fool the Israeli intelligence services, too, so that it looked like the WMD intelligence came from two sources when, in fact, it was only from one phony source.”
The point is that GWB really, really wanted to get Saddam and he used 9/11 and the WMD flap as an excuse to do it. What made it a disaster was that there was no effective plan of what to do after we won. “Let them loot!” is not a useful occupation strategy. Ambassador Crocker was an idiot. The de-Baathification debacle returned the country to tribal anarchy. The Marines in Al Anbar province were able to co-opt the tribal structure into a more cohesive government, but central government screwed that up and it has never recovered.
So Bush lied, some of my friends died, is easier way to sum up the Iraq invasion.
FWIW, I didn't like what Trump said either re Bush. I don't believe for a minute that Bush lied to get us into war and in the end there were WMD's found in Iraq.
Why Bush came out and said there were not boggles my mind, but it does show me he would say it to play the political game.

Not Bush’s fault.
Iraq may not have had any so called Weapons of Mass Destruction in form of nuclear devices, but it had plenty of yellow cake to the tune of 550 metric tons, a precursor to produce fissionable material. Eventually it was transferred to Canada for reprocessing for a more peaceful use. In other words the intend was there but it Iraq never got that far. On the other hand Iran is already there and since their leadership consists of a bunch of dingbats who wouldn’t hesitate to go nuclear, sooner or later some one will have to take them out.
