I think we need more similarities to how freedoms begins to end. Something at the beginning of the Red Revolution that looked like today.
Just hearing about total loss of freedom will NOT connect with young voters thinking Bernie makes sense. It’s too great a (whoops pun) leap for them.
...I think we need more similarities to how freedoms begins to end. Yes, if you could see the history of how a Soviet or Chinese communist society grew step by step, that would be powerful. Sounds like a great project for someone in Hollywood. Maybe a guy like Trump can encourage and publicize the work of film makers who really care about preserving the fabric of the republic -- the civil society. We need to help make those films financially viable. It can be done, I think. My wife is from Japan, so we get the national TV channel NHK by satellite. They feature a once-a-year drama that runs for 50 weeks, 45 minutes (no commercials) every Sunday night. The drama is about Japanese history and centers around the life a particular hero -- or often a brother or sister of a famous person. The series highlights the struggles of the time, the politics and battles in the samurai days and in more modern periods. Besides the splendid acting and production values, the series educates the nation morally. You learn what heroism is, and so in this case you do get a chance to see the progression of events that lead to tyranny and liberation. The series is called the Taiga Drama and here's a YouTube showing 5 minutes from this year's first episode Sanada Maru. You'll get a flavor for what it's about. But I see what you're saying, Yaelle. To make the leap from their life today to a future tyranny is hard to imagine. Hey Gaigin, Curious, did you follow the Taiga Drama when you lived in Japan? |
