people will trust another person who seems (on the surface at least) to be successful.
Those same people expect the government to be totally corrupt.
That is why there is “selective outrage.”

I know people whose retirements were destroyed by this. Many were wealthy or young enough to manage this, others were not.
One couple were sick formerly wealthy retirees. The husband was a diabetic who lost his legs and his wife was recovering from cancer, when they learned that they lost most of their savings. 1/3 of their investments were with Madoff. 1/3 were in the general stock market, which was in the tank at the time. 1/3 were supposed to be diversified bonds annuities and hedge fund holdings. However unbeknownst to the couple, much of this had been invested with Madoff as the stock market became risky by their brokers. They didn't live long enough to burn through the post-tax income on the apartment they sold. The husband had a stroke a few months later and the wife's cancer relapsed in 2012.
