The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) has recommended that any athlete or trainer concerned about the Zika outbreak in Latin America should consider not attending the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Two anonymous sources told Reuters that the USOC issued the suggestion late in January on a teleconference call. President and board chairman of USA fencing Donald Anthony said no person should travel if "they don't feel comfortable going. Bottom line."
"One of the things that they immediately said was, especially for women that may be pregnant or even thinking of getting pregnant, that whether you are scheduled to go to Rio or no, that you shouldn't go," explained Anthony. "And no one should go if they feel at all as though that that threat could impact them."
The U.S. has advised all pregnant women not to travel to the 33 countries affected by Zika

But, hey, go anyway, let's Celebrate Diversity!
Don’t worry about Ebola, but now is the time to fear Zika.
What?
I smell a rat.
Does anyone know the symptoms of Zika and the dangers of contracting it other than birth defects?
Thought I read here a couple days ago, that there’s no real evidence tying Zika to the problem. Is that correct? Although I can understand not taking the chance.
Wonderful. I have a relative that is a serious contender for a medal in the women’s discus.
Would you go?
Zika is more likely to spread thru a population unnoticed except for a proliferation of birth defects. Ebola is horrible, but will (short of 3rd world conditions) burn itself out fast.
Goes to the highest bribe,I mean, bidder!
“Did you miss this in my post?
— Although I can understand not taking the chance.—
But, as I asked in my post if there was any real evidence connecting Zika to the birth defects. There was an article here within the last few days saying there was no proven connection, and that it could have been some vaccinations or something. That’s why I asked. And, no, I wouldn’t go unless it was proven that Zika was not the cause.
I think many athletes are a lot more concerned about the super polluted toxic water they are being required to swim in.
A coworker has been to Brazil, and frankly he is amazed the Olympics will be held there...his biggest concern: Dengue Fever.
Zika my ass, what about the frick’n ‘toilet’ that Rio calls the ocean and bay they will be holding the open water sports in? The idea that IOC would award the games to a country with this many sanitation problems is beyond me. They should have told them, clean up first, then we’ll give you the games.
Can’t they just hold the water sports in the Amazon. Should set speed records once contestants start to feel the little nibbles ....
Don’t they allow their untreated sewage to run directly into the bay and ocean? For 10+ million people, that’s a lot of “floaters” (if you get my drift).
Aches and fever that aren’t as bad as the flu. Four out of five infected people have no symptoms at all.
They should have given it to Chicago. Afterall, our Nobel Prize winning POTUS personally lobbied for it.
Yes: Swimmers will be competing amid the excrement of 10 million people. Floaters, sinkers, explosive diarrhea, poo-poo pebbles, et al.
Frankly, I think the Corrupt Olympics should be completely excreted from Western Society.
The corruption demeans us.
Here’s more. I think we’re on the same side, but I’m just not certain the cause has yet been identified. This bolsters your opinion I believe;
