At Saturday night's debate, Republicans wanted Marco Rubio to soar and Donald Trump to stumble. The opposite happened.
The Republican establishment's fondest hope before Saturday night's debate was that Marco Rubio would deliver yet another solid (if unmemorable) debate performance, and that Donald Trump would fall on his face - compounding the damage he suffered in Iowa, and surrendering more, if not all, of his lead in New Hampshire over to Rubio, who's in second place and climbing.
Instead, the establishment got almost exactly the opposite.
The single biggest spoiler wasn't Trump, or even Ted Cruz, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who - let's not euphemize - humiliated Rubio in an exchange about Rubio's dearth of experience and accomplishments. Christie became the first Republican presidential candidate this cycle to weaponize Rubio's grating habit of pivoting to relevant portions of his stump speech rather than answering the questions posed to him.

That had to be one of the best debates I’ve ever watched!
The GOP establishment’s Golden Boy Rubio is fading and the rest of the tier is focusing their fire on him instead of on Trump.
Time to break out the Maalox.
Rubio swings both ways!
Ted Cruz was the indisputable winner on all issues and facts. CRUZ was Presidential.
Christi was outstanding and came in 2nd.
Trump, just being his obnoxious self.
Carson.....well what can one say....
You didn’t mention BUSH. He is ‘surging’ in the polls. Go figure.
As Bill Mitchell said this morning:
“There’s a lot of yelling going on in the halls of the GOPe” to which I tweeted: “...and a lot of wet pants!”....
GO.TRUMP.GO!!!
Me too.
Which is why we should be thankful for Bernie. Hopefully the two commies will duke it out all the way to the convention, so there aren't any crossover voters.
[Me too.]
If BUSH somehow gets the nomination by hook & crook at the Republican convention, there will be a historic revolt from the GOP.
Jeb is the man who wasn’t there. Ask Barbara, his mom.
Jeb attacked Trump regarding eminent domain when his own family has resorted to it. Jeb’s bringing up handicapped was weird since he was the one who allowed Terri Schiavo to die a horrific death even though he could have saved her.
God I’m listening to my husband now.He does not like Trump, sometimes I feel we watch different debates. So glad to have FR-makes it more fun.My husband thinks Rubio did great.I think I’ll strangle him _Hehehheheh I was waiting for Christie to bop Rubio,Rubio looked like he was on the witness stand.
You're right AND MUCH better than the huggy poo 'debate' democrats did a few days ago...
I think Democrats are too locked into their own Bernie/Hillary war to cross over and vote against Trump.
Trump actually benefitted from being ignored for large stretches of time. Since none of the other candidates mentioned him, there was no obligation for the moderators to go to him to get his responses to him being mentioned. This gave Christie the chance to nail Rubio on his canned talking points, and in general the other candidates to flounder amongst one another. So finally when Trump was directly asked a question it had a lot more impact than it otherwise would’ve had-—sort of like the way the F word is used onstage in a play ONLY ONCE, out of the blue, rather than every minute or so.So basically (even though I haven’t looked at the “polling” in the aftermath) I think Trump won anyway, even though I can see how some of them, like Kasich? gained a few approval points.
Ok, BUSH......will that do it? lol
They don't care if it's Hillary, Biden, Bush, or Rubio, six one way, half dozen the other.
