It must be more than a decade ago when I got a glimpse of the man often referred to as "George W. Bush's smarter, younger brother."
Charlie Cook and I were scheduled to speak to a group of Florida business leaders during lunch, but before we began our shtick, the state's sitting governor, Jeb Bush, was to offer some remarks.
Bush was running late that day, so when he finally arrived he blew into the room like a summer rain squall. He sat down, a bit out of breath as I remember it, and quickly turned to the group's executive director to ask what he should talk about.

Even taller on tippy-toes
I do not see a single instance, or widely spaced multiple instances, of running late as a clear indicator of time management issues. It is in the chronic, constant lateness that one can perceive that fatal character flaw, such as in “The One” now occupying the White House.
Because schedules are affected by other people, it is not always the person’s fault.
Now, for Jeb(!) I’m willing to suspend my normal benefit of the doubt...
Great quote, reminds me of a long ago day when I was #2 of an ADA battery undergoing a tac eval (ARTEP). My commander went Jeb on me by incorrectly coding coordinates for a mission. Long story short, it was bad enough to flunk us.
That evening, I "spit on my hands" after his latest uninspiring directions for the third and final day. I entered into a loud and abrasive ten minute dissertation of exactly what each squad would do the next day in order to pass. I had taken 3 of the 4 platoons through evaluations, so I knew what each soldier in every squad was supposed to do. I "hoisted the black flag" in that, should we fail, I would tell each and every soldier the reason why we flunked is that we, as leaders, failed to do our jobs.
Although my four platoon leaders were seething at me, the lead evaluator overheard every word I heard...not surprising as I was incensed. I bumped into him shortly after departing the command post. He had a big grin on his face, and he said, "LT, that was beautiful!"
My BC reminds me of Jeb: wonkish, a great staff officer, but keep him away from troop leadership...a classic REMF. BTW, I never considered myself much more than an average officer, but I was surrounded by excellent soldiers and NCOs. I was never the "smartest guy in the room", but I developed into an officer that could make the correct decisions when all hell broke loose.
In my previous post, on the second day of that evaluation, a platoon missed his morning mission time by 30 minutes. The entire battery could have, should have, been flunked over that one misstep. Rarely have I ever had "a case of the jaws" that did not let up for nearly two days.
"I'm sorry, but I have to end our conversation -- I need to be conference room 347 in exactly 2 minutes. I'm not the kind of person who keeps people waiting. We can talk more later. Good-bye."
It's not hard.
But if you stay in the lobby and let some guy talk your ear off while people are waiting for you in conference room 347, then you are showing no respect for them. It's bad.
Everytime Jeb comes on TV I see Dan Akryod, and I just can’t take Jeb seriously....
Dan Akroyd on some sort of depressant ...
Thanks-—you are a whiff of fresh air—I was also ‘not the smartest guy in the room’ but had top notch subordinates and a skipper who gave his men a chance to ‘do their thing’, as long a we were together as a ‘crew’-—while my WW2 time was at the enlisted level, we were much the same in direction-—cheers
He got 2.8 pct in Iowa... and is polling at 9 and 10 pct in SC and NH, now with fewer candidates. He either steps fully into the second tier by FEB 20 (SC), or he drops out after a humiliating Super Tuesday on March 1.
Are you cereal?
Yep....has that “hot throbbing member” ring to it.
The people are not looking for a policy wonk, someone to tinker around the edges. That’s what was elected for so many years and it hasn’t worked. We want a barn burner.
After turning the state of Florida fascist, he fell flat on his face.
You honor me with your reply. I cannot thank you enough for your service.
He doesn’t have to, but yet he does. Demonstration of his insecurity. It’s amazing how Trump’s entry into this race utterly ripped the facade off El Jebbe’s candidacy completely and revealed him as the lightweight that he is, riding on the family name.
Couldn’t ? Wouldn’t.
They weren’t dumbfounded. That was the plan. Willard and McQueeg were outright ringers. They were there to make sure no Conservative got the nomination and jeopardized their hold on the party. RINOs have no problem with Democrat Presidents, it serves their agenda perfectly.
Never doubt the collusion of the Uniparty â Donkeys and RINOs acting as one to preserve their power and perks.
Exactly.
1. Positions - this is not the year to be a pro-amnesty Republican. Period.
2. Political incompetence - if you tell or even imply to your base that you can win without them, they're likely to take you up on it. Stupid, amateur move.
3. Personal awkwardness - I haven't seen a candidate in quite awhile who is this tin-eared politically. "I want to be your first" - oh, really? The attacks on the other candidates sounded like a junior high-school election. The drug-addled daughter. The feisty Mom. "Please clap." And Yeb!, buddy, nobody gives a rat's patoot if you can speak Spanish. If it mattered, my high-school Spanish teacher would be Governor by now.
4. This is the real killer, Yeb! kept a political staff around who spend $100 million for no results. Who thought "Yeb! can fix it" was a heart-thumping slogan on the order of "I have not yet begun to fight!" Who let him make a fool of himself time and time again. Trump would have fired those bozos months ago. Hillary would have had them rubbed out and used their shrunken heads for Christmas tree ornaments. Yeb! shoveled more money at them.
And so, "What Happened To Jeb Bush?" Overconfidence and a misplaced faith that DC connections and deep-pocketed donors could take the place of votes. The author says his brother ruined the brand for him. Nope. This one's on Yeb!.
