Next Stop, the Political Twilight Zone

Not defeat, but rather how one responds to it, determines “winners” and “losers.” Winners say, “Congratulations.” Losers affirm their designation by barking, “You cheated.”

Donald Trump, after uncharacteristic graciousness in defeat Monday night, emerged as himself by accusing Ted Cruz of stealing the Iowa caucuses from him. At least Al Gore could claim he won the popular vote. The Donald lost convincingly to a man down five in the polls entering the contest. But he’s convinced he didn’t lose.

Trump, using his preferred means of discourse, tweeted: “The State of Iowa should disqualify Ted Cruz from the most recent election on the basis that he cheated—a total fraud!” The allegation stems from the Cruz campaign urging Ben Carson supporters to vote for the Texas senator because of a CNN report that indicated the neurosurgeon planned to go home rather than to New Hampshire after Iowa. Reflected Trump, “I think those votes should be taken away.”

Losing gives us a lesson if we listen. Monday shouted the importance of campaign organization, not merely candidate personality, in winning elections. It shook Trump by the lapels for skipping the final debate. It provided the cruel one-liner comeback to Don Rickles with worse hair, suggesting that many voters don’t care for comedian-candidates fixating on the faith or the faces of their opponents

“comedian-candidates fixating on the faith or the faces of their opponents”

Trump does good comedy. Cruz is not good at comedy.

Cruz has the face of a used car salesman. Trump looks cool when he’s angry. Cruz displaying any emotion looks insincere.

Donald Trump was very strong spoken at the Exeter NH rally today, took questions as well.

I thought it was one of his best events so far, it was fresher, stronger, more passion.

Didn’t come off as a tent revival either.

That's good to hear. Perhaps Mr. Trump is at his finest when he gets a challenge and has to put his best analytic and problem-solving skills in gear.

“Hate” is the way the left described principled opposition to Obama. It’s not too surprising that the pseudo conservative candidates more lowbrow followers falls for the same idea that one could not oppose the infantile philistine Trump because, after all, he is not a conservative.

Might have something to with being a reality TV star for many years...

Trump is an accomplished pitchman. He didn’t have to work very hard to make the sell with you...

He’d also be very good at used cars...

This is a general comment, not one directed at just this situation.

I personally am beyond ‘tired’ and in the ticked off zone when it comes to ‘cheating’. ANY kind of cheating, welfare cheats, tax cheats, academic cheats and yes... political cheats. And that includes the say anything to get elected type of cheating.

Because cheating especially in the political realm may make a ‘winner’ of the politician in that he/she got elected. It cheats those he/she lied to saying that they would represent the voter when they clearly never intended to do so. It cheats the voter out of the type of representation they wanted and needed.

I don’t know, Boy. People who share the same opinions don’t have to be conspiring. Probably that’s beyond your ken.

He’s bankrupted enough companies. Maybe his destiny is to bankrupt our nation.

I can't prove it but I have a sneaking suspicion that Donald Trump is actually working for Clinton and the Dem's. He's a phony IMHO. All of his positions have changed 180 degrees. How can we trust this man?

I agree. Of course, saying this means we’re not real conservatives in the eyes of those who follow the Donald.

IMO, the Iowa caucus was a major waste of time except for Cruz and Hitlary. To my understanding the process used to select a candidate is wide open to fraud, to say the least. I point to the demodummie voting process as a prime example. There is no real cut and dried structure to how votes a cast or MORE IMPORTANTLY, counted. (Where did we hear, “It's not who cast the votes, its who COUNTS the votes”.....?). Then, voting on the GOP side one needs only to take a ballot, cast your vote and return back to the line and pickup another ballot and start the process all over again. It would appear to leave the door wide open to fraud. So, now onto New Hampshire to see if that states voting process is any improvement of the worthless process in Iowa.

You do not have your facts correct on how either Iowa party operates.

For the GOP, the number of votes has to be matched with the number of registered attendees. Almost every caucus has guests of one sort or another watching. Votes are counted by reps from each candidate and anyone else who can crowd around. Many if not most attendees record results for themselves to verify the numbers that end up being publicized.

For Democrats, supporters stand with each other and count off. Anyone interested can write down numbers. Even with Dems, there’s an eventual paper trail. Registered voters are marked off state lists, and new registrations go to the state.
