Shattuck: Charlie Baker using kids’ logic for ‘Snake Island’
The Boston Herald ^ | 02/03/16 | Tom Shattuck

Did a proposal to save a breed of poisonous snakes by giving them their own island in the Quabbin Reservoir make it all the way to the governor’s office?

You bet it did. And Charlie Baker supports it.

It is being called Rattlesnake Island, and it is soon to be inhabited by a group of lucky pit vipers called Timber Rattlesnakes.

I understand many animals, like the snakes, once thrived here — but so did polio.

But no, Gov. Baker, we don’t need to be pushing self destructive feel-good projects.

No one-inch moths. No three-inch fish, and certainly no six-foot rattlesnakes.

He’s just trying to please his MA constituents, who will endorse every crackpot scheme anyone can devise.

Man, I could write a five-star movie script over this....plane gets hijacked and crashes in the middle of Snake-Island. A dozen snake-handlers are recruited to come and save the survivors.

I endorse this idea. I think they should build a retirement home for retired politicians there. After all, politicians are snakes.

Years ago the rumor in Missouri was that the conservation department was reintroducing timber rattlesnakes into the Mark Twain forest but dropping them out of helicopters. Many folks swore this was true despite MDC saying it wasn't. I had folks tell me that they actually heard the helicopters (the probably did, national guard looking for pot growers).

The fact that dropping a snake from a few hundred feet above the ground wouldn't bode well for the snake never occurred to them.

I was a young teen during the gypsy moth
infestation of the early 1980.
It was UNBELIEVABLE, the little suckers were EVERYWHERE.
At night their munching on leaves would sound like pouring rain, You couldn’t walk outside without stepping on them.
We used to collect them in bottles and blow them up with fireworks, Flame blasting their nests with hairspray and a lighter was always great fun.
I remember one afternoon amusing myself by repeatedly shoving a bunch of them into the spark plug hole of my lawnmower then starting it up.
Ahhh, fun times...
