Russia’s Su-35S fighters in Syria to be used against ground targets — expert

MOSCOW, February 2. /TASS/. Russia’s newest Sukhoi Su-35S fighters, redeployed to Syria, will be flight-tested in real combat conditions and make a contribution to destroying terrorist targets on the ground, the former chief of the Lipetsk air pilots training center, Major-General Alexander Kharchevsky, has said.

He believes that the Sukhoi Su-35S planes, just as the Sukhoi Su-30SM, dispatched to Syria earlier, "are equally effective in attacking air and surface targets."

"In particular, Sukhoi-35 will be able to use its high maneuverability (in fact, unparalleled at the moment) in dog fight and effectively attack targets on the surface," Kharchevsky told TASS.

"These unique planes will certainly contribute a lot to the air group’s strike power," he said.

Another purpose of sending Russia’s newest planes in Syria is to test them in real combat. Such tests "are very important from all points of view."

"It would be very wrong to miss this chance to see our air technologies in action and it is being used to the full," Kharchevsky said.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov on Monday told the media Sukhoi-35 fighters had been moved to Syria. The fighters already began to fly combat missions from the Hmeimim air base last week. The statement followed another incident in Russian-Turkish relations. Ankara accused a Russian plane of straying into Turkish airspace. Moscow dismissed the charges as groundless.

Being that the Su-35S is so “...highly maneuverable,” perhaps a not so veiled hint to Turkey?

Well now we know why Obama wanted to quadruple the military funding to repel the Russia military's advances over there. His buddies are getting a$$e$ kicked by the Russians.

Compete bullshit.

The Su-35 can be used as an air-to-ground fighter, but it is no better in that role that much cheaper (and cheaper to operate) aircraft.

The Su-35 is, first and foremost, an air-to-air fighter, and a damn good one at that. It is arguably superior to Turkey’s F-16s in most roles. Israel’s F-16s and F-15s are only superior due to pilot skills and specialized updates. The Su-35 would certainly give them a run for the money.

This is a signal to Turkey and the USA that Russia intends to own the air above Syria.

And unless the USA intends to put a bunch of F-18s and F-22s in Israel (or Jordan or Turkey), Russia WILL own the air above Syria.

the Su-35S is an older design than our F-35, but a more useful fighter and ground attack jet. The 35S can maneuver better, carry more ordnance and has a cannon with more rounds. The F-35 is more stealthy, but advances in radar are lessening that advantage. The F-35 has more advanced electronics, but these need a lot of debugging. The F-35 costs much more per plane, so we can’t afford very many. The F-35 has a short take off variant, but still is a turkey. The US should regard the F-53 as a design trial, learn from it and move on to a new design competition for fifth generation jets.

Should have continued to make the F-22, that plane beats all others in air to air combat for the most part.

The bit about the SU-35’s cannon is not right. It carries as much as all Russian supersonic fighters: 150 rounds, which is less than what the F-35 carries.
