NATO warns Russia to 'fully respect' Turkish airspace

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday warned Russia it will "face consequences" after Ankara accused Moscow of a new violation of its airspace.

"Russia will have to face consequences if it keeps on such violations against Turkey's sovereignty rights," Erdogan told reporters at an Istanbul airport before leaving on a Latin America tour. "Such irresponsible steps do not benefit either the Russian Federation, or Russia-NATO relations, or regional and global peace."

"A Su-34 plane belonging to the Russian Federation air force violated Turkish airspace at 11:46 (0946 GMT) local time yesterday (Friday)," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The allegation comes just over two months after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane on the Syrian border on November 24, saying it had violated Turkish airspace.

Ankara on Friday summoned the Russian ambassador to the Foreign Ministry to "strongly protest and condemn" the latest alleged violation, the Ministry added, without specifying where it took place.

Ankara called on Russia to "act responsibly" and warned: "We stress once again that all the responsibility for any unwanted grave consequences as a result of any such irresponsible behavior will belong entirely to the Russian Federation."

NATO head Jens Stoltenberg on Saturday has also warned Russia it must "fully respect" alliance airspace as key member Turkey blasted Moscow for "irresponsible behavior."

"I call on Russia to act responsibly and to fully respect NATO airspace. Russia must take all necessary measures to ensure that such violations do not happen again," Stoltenberg said in a statement.

Why is Turkey still in NATO? They are in bed with the enemy. They are the f@#$$ing enemy, but WW III might start -- scratch that -- intensify -- over some stupid incident between Russia and Turkey. Throw them out now.

Why? What will Nato do if Russia doesn’t? Shoot them a mean looking scowl?

I’m sure the Russians will respect that part of Turkish airspace not covered by the S400 system at Latakia ...

NATO? Or Turkey? If Turkey insists on being a turkey, it can’t hide behind the skirts of NATO-ness.

Russia is going to set up an event or events that will expose NATO as a paper tiger and bring down the Alliance.

Turkey will probably spell the end of NATO because they are becoming more radicalized. Combined with the growing Muslim population of Europe one has to wonder what NATO looks like in 20 years when their political power has grown far larger.

Now you done it. That’s how people die in saloons in Westerns. Somebody keeps egging on the combatants, calling them chicken until they ‘draw’. Normally, Nato might chicken out, but because they’re being taunted on freep, they’ll get WW III, presently ongoing, to a full boil over G-dam Turkey’s mother-f#$%#$%#ing air-space! They gotta be thrown out of NATO on their ass as of yesterday.

No loss. Sort of tired of decades of European military welfare dependents.

In this chapter, NATO needs to repurpose and redefine its purpose, needs and intent.
It needs to sidle up to Russia for the new war and eject Turkey for the muslim group that they are.

We are in a new era, with different demands.

And then they’ll march into Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, etc., and not even wipe their feet at the door.

NATO will have a different face, if it even keeps on existing. Maybe the tenor of relations between the USA and Russia will change such that nobody will envision its need. NATO was an ad hoc creation in response to the danger the USSR posed.

I would imagine if Turkey drew us into a war, a lot of US soldiers will refuse to fight for Turkey.

If — big if — they continue down their old road.

One major difference is that the new Russia also embraced Christianity. The USSR was officially atheist. This is an improvement over the brute consequences of enforced atheism. The church may be venal, but it isn’t just “nothing.”
