Ted Cruz started the month riding high in Iowa. Now, he just wants to get out of the state alive.
The self-styled rock-ribbed conservative is under siege, battling attacks from his right and left flanks who say the Texas senator with tea party and evangelical credentials isn't who he claims to be.
And as Cruz appears to be falling farther behind front-runner Donald Trump, his campaign is now looking in the rear-view mirror, concerned that Marco Rubio and the rest of the GOP field are closing in.
Cruz's problems were in sharp relief at the Fox News debate in Des Moines Thursday night, where he was everyone's favorite punching bag. The consistent charge: Cruz is a fake.
"This is the lie that Ted's campaign is built on, and Rand touched upon it -- that he's the most conservative guy, and everyone else is a -- you know, everyone else is a RINO," Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday night. "The truth is, Ted, throughout this campaign, you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes."
A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll shows that Trump has overtaken Cruz by 7 points, leading 32% to 25%.
Most tellingly, both his campaign and one of his super PACs on Thursday launched new television advertisements against Rubio, a candidate they already saw on defeated.
...
Meanwhile, Trump is free to skip debates and constantly question Cruz's eligibility to serve as president.
"I'm glad I wasn't there 'cause I guess all of that -- he got pummeled, wow," Trump said Friday of the Fox News debate. "And you know they didn't even mention he was born in Canada."

Reporters seem to have lost the art of reporting facts and instead think they can report motives.Which is exactly what you just did.
No, I gave my opinion. I carefully stated it as such. I can’t know motives as fact. I can only suspect.
I honestly don’t see that happening.
Ted poured his hopes and dreams into Iowa.
He tried to fire up his camp by telling them there was no way he could lose. That’s okay if you win. If you don’t it can crush your supporters. They’ll feel somewhat betrayed.
After Iowa, Cruz hasn’t much chance of anything IMO.
Let’s wait and see if he loses Iowa first, but that my take if he does.
It is one thing to suspect certain motives. It is another to act as a reporter of facts and state that so and so is doing this and that for X motive. Cruz could be focusing on Rubio because he is scared of a Rubio rise, because he has given up on catching Trump, or whatever. Frankly I think the simple answer is usually right. He is focusing on Rubio because Rubio is focusing on him. No one knows without asking Cruz. If the author wants to report on motive, ask the question and quote the candidate in context.
The consensus is that Cruz is not who he says he is. Something to that effect.

I wonder if Ted knows that his campaign manager admitted to sending out this shady mailer to voters in Iowa.
The writer states that this was verified with the Cruz Campaign. Independent Journal Review appears to attack all candidates, which gives me some comfort.
“Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler confirmed to IJ Review that the mailer was theirs in a phone call Friday evening, saying that the targeting had been “very narrow, but the caucuses are important and we want people who haven’t voted before to vote.”
He Said He Was An Undecided Iowan Until He He Received This Controversial Mailer From Ted Cruz.

Mull this over when we are talking “ethics”.
Thank you for the link.
By this time I’ve seen it all. Everything you folks could toss at Trump you have.
Now the wheels are coming off Ted’s campaign Conestoga.
Enjoy...
You would have been thrilled if it’s was Trump’s ride.
It isn’t.
Thank you very much for the ping to the mailer story!
Desperation smells like sulfur.
If I got something like this, I would be FURIOUS, and I would loathe the SOB that sent it.
Note that a follow-up notice may be sent after the caucus. A subtle "threat" that they'd be letting the neighbors know if they didn't vote this time.
Must have been one of Glenn Beck's ideas.
I see that he got the idea from Obama the Magnificent during his Iowa run, but it speaks volumes about Cruz that he didn't understand that Midwest Republicans would hate this.
Your being duped!!
Thank you.
From one duped person to another, you have my sympathy.
I try to be low key.
Do you know who was president when Jag officers were assigned to practically ever mission in order to assure charges could be brought agains our War Fighters if they made a mistake and shot a civilian that dresses exactly like the enemy? Why GW of course, who also allowed our men to be charged with crimes for fighting the enemy. Did you trust George? Did you like the way Clinton sexualized the military and the way it continued under who? Why I do believe it was GW.
But the guy who really tries to help Vets and promises to rebuild the military, him you don't trust. Got it.
Are you saying he wasn't a Canadian Citizen?
You understand he doesn't think Cruz can win don't you?
There, that make you feel better?
Low key. How do you do that, especially here in troll country? :)
I posted it within a thread rather than create a posting and let someone else pick it up. That seems to work. :)
I see, GR. I have been awfully dense lately. I do see what you mean. I have to do that also, but only because I can’t post easily on this computer.
