GOP insiders: It was a rough night for Ted Cruz
Politico ^ | 01/29/16 | Steven Shepard

In the final debate before Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses, Ted Cruz had the worst night of the seven GOP presidential candidates on stage Thursday.

That's according to a plurality of the Republican members of The POLITICO Caucus - a panel of strategists, operatives and activists in Iowa and the other three February-voting states: New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada. The insiders participated in the survey immediately following the debate in Des Moines, an event more notable for the absence of Iowa and national poll-leader Donald Trump than anything else.

More than 4-in-10 GOP insiders - given the choice of the seven GOP candidates on the stage, plus Trump - rated Cruz as the loser of Thursday night's debate, citing his defensive posture on his past immigration stances and opposition to ethanol subsidies.

"He seemed plastic and insincere," said one Iowa Republican, who, like all respondents, completed the post-debate survey anonymously. "The crowd clearly liked Gov. [Terry] Branstad a lot more than they like Ted Cruz."

“DT and his supporters have no compunction shutting down their opposition - you and me - any way not prohibited by law. “

Hmm... Sounds like a certain current resident of Pennsylvania Avenue to me! Isn’t that type of behavior what we all hate so much about Obama? That he used the IRS to suppress groups he did not like?

People really aren't listening to what Trump is and has been saying. They seem to have political blinders on. Trump will not end the DC Uniparty. He is the DC Uniparty. His plan is to work with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and McCain and Gramnesty. His plan is to supposedly deport illegal aliens and let the "good ones" come back in on an expedited basis, IOW bypassing all the people who have been waiting in line for years.

But he talks in vague little sound bites and his campaign is pretty much sloganeering and personality.

If you listen to what he is saying, he is not a conservative. He may be a big nationalist, but he is a compromiser. That's how he works. He lays out a position on the far edge of an issue (like immigration - Deport everybody - No Muslims until we figure this thing out) and then when he goes in for negotiations, he meets in the middle (OK we will only deport the bad ones and the good ones can stay).

He is not principled. Never has been. Never will be.

If you are looking for a first class compromiser. Donald Trump is your guy. Vote for him.

If you are looking for a principled conservative, then you are going to have to look elsewhere.

“...a panel of strategists, operatives and activists...”

I’m not so sure I (or anyone else) would value an opinion from their point of view.

Kelly showed video clips of Cruz to support her question/accusation. I have never seen that before. I didn’t watch much of the debate do I don’t know if she did it for all. It struck me as very unusual and even unfair.

She was the prosecutor and he was the defendant. She pulled out evidence she'd brought into the courtroom to convict him or elicit a confession.

This is really bad, folks. If the media is allowed to do this, they can pick a candidate and destroy them at will. How many viewers did her performance sway? Moderators aren't there to manipulate elections, this has to stop.

The same people who can't understand why Trump is leading. Gotcha.

Does DT rally his troops against the Left? NO. He mobilizes them against Cruz supporters, freezing, polarizing us with his Alinsky tactics. Last night when they ran out of frenzy juice on the Trump thread, they swarmed the Cruz thread with their bloodlust. Did any Cruz supporters attack the Trump thread?

DT has isolated the Swarming switch in his potential and nascent brownshirts, reminiscient of Imhotep marshalling his undead army in The Mummy.

Just not against the RAT left, against his own side! How does he plan to win the general without 20 million Cruz supporters?

Maybe he doesn't really want to win the General.

That's a pretty frightening thought, eh?

“Did you see Kelly’s interview with Cruz right after the debate?”

It is almost humorous to see the much-maligned Megyn Kelly all of a sudden be granted final word status on this site.

Even more frightening: Thank God DT didn’t run as a RAT. Just imagine.....

I would not be surprised if Cruz is slaughtered Monday night. And his actions since Trump announced he was skipping the debate knocks Cruz out of the future “Friends of Trump” club.

What will you do when Cruz does not win Iowa? I will tell you. It’s over then.

Cruz took a long swig of Donald Trump and spat it out when the true flavor shone through. You’ll likely find yourself doing the same once/if you start analyzing Trump’s real taste instead of rating him with ‘everybody’s drinking it.’

When all is said and done, Cruz will support Trump, and Trump will be our next POTUS! Go Trump!

Yes, Cruz will, doubtful the same could be said for Trump.

As little as two weeks ago I was still hoping for Trump/Cruz, but that ship was never even built, let alone sailed, as it turns out.

Trump has been a bitter, awful disappointment recently. Such a shame, and he doesn’t even pretend to WANT to be decent. Maybe God will change his heart.

I will vouch for Marlowe’s support for Trump. There is no way that Marlowe will support Hillary, and if Trump is the nominee, then he will support a 3rd party candidate or Trump. He won’t support Hillary, Sanders, et al.

That said, I am a Trump supporter, and after he wins Monday, I will attempt to win Marlowe back to support for a CONSERVATIVE CONVERT.
