Washington (CNN)--Donald Trump has hit a new high in the race for the Republican nomination, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll, with more than 4-in-10 Republican voters nationwide now saying they back the billionaire. And more than two-thirds of Republicans say he's the candidate most likely to capture their party's presidential nomination.
Trump has topped the 40% mark for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, standing at 41%. That more than doubles the support of his nearest competitor, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who notches 19% support in the poll. No other candidate hit double-digits. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio landed at 8%, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 6%, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 5%, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 4%, and the rest at 3% or less.
Despite the new high-mark for Trump, the GOP race remains fairly stable compared with where it was in the most recent CNN/ORC poll in late December.
In that poll, Trump stood at 39%, Cruz at 18% and Rubio at 10%. Carson's 4-point dip, from 10% to 6%, between the two surveys is the largest change in the field, and it is not large enough to be a statistically significant change given the new poll's 5-point margin of sampling error.
Trump's lead is clearly significant, however, and the poll finds him well ahead of the field among a range of GOP subgroups. He leads among both men and women, younger and older voters, white evangelicals, conservatives and both self-identified Republicans and independents who lean toward the party.

Also, internal dynamics of these polls show that the support for other candidates is softer than support for Trump, meaning Trump has clear room for growth.
Trump will be over the 50% mark before the SC primary.
My top 3 are Trump, Cruz, and Paul.
Paul was on Hannity last night and was very good.
He has a matter-of-fact intensity about him that should have served him better. I suspect he needed more air time.
I have not ever in the past, nor am I now, a PaulBot.
Is Paul over 5’? I see his head and shoulders on camera for most of his interviews, but when he is on a 4 legged stool opposite the interviewer his feet don’t come near the floor giving the viewer the impression that he is “vertically challenged”.
When the debates first started, the appeared to be height organized with Bush in the middle, then Trump, and on down. Based on my eyeballs, those at the end of either side were in the neighborhood of 5’6-8.
Bush standing on his tiptoes reminded of Gore’s weird hulking vulture act during the one town hall debate in 2000.
CRUZ WINS IOWA, take it to the bank!
GW's response was classic. He looks at like "what the heck do you want" and gives him a really curt nod.
WOW. You insult everything Jesus stood for and taught.
It was funny, and at the same time it showed that Gore was a real oddball.
I forgot about Paul.
The Pauls can certainly pack a caucus if they need to.
He may be a sleeper 2nd place behind Trump. Usually the quietest ones make the biggest moves at the end.
I was told yesterday that Jesus endorses Cruz.
I guess Beck wasn’t good enough.
Honestly, I think Cruz is an evangelical, and I think he’s a sincere one. Paraphrasing Pastor Jeffress yesterday when he quasi-endorsed Donald Trump, we aren’t voting for the guy who can lead the best bible studies in the Oval Office. He said it’s more important to have the candidate who is most conservative and most likely to win.
I agree with him that it is Trump.
I will not hesitate to support Cruz if he comes out on top, though.
ping!!!
WOOHOO GO. TRUMP!!!
I really have to agree with you on that!!! But they are being lead by a ‘cult’ leader Beck....
Thanks for the ping.
I’ll vote for the prick if he is on the ballot in November, but he is NO conservative.
Not at all, Cruz is a wonderful Christian pouring himself out for the Lord and for us, and you are choosing Trump who stands against the things of Christ and is bearing false witness against Ted Cruz.
There is no question that Jesus is for Cruz
