Is billionaire and Republican frontrunner Donald J. Trump a conservative, or not?
Fox Newsâ Jesse Watters has made the best possible case that he is.
âCome on, letâs talk about his conservative principles on the three core issues Donald Trump is about; immigration, national security and jobs. He is the most conservative guy out there and he is setting the agenda,â Watters said on Friday, responding to National Reviewâs anti-Trump manifesto. He could have added a few others, like guns.
But thatâs not quite convincing enough for many conservatives. Trumpâs vehemence about his views should not, and does not, obscure the fact that they are, for the most part, very new.
This is a man, after all, who criticized 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for using the term âself-deportationâ because it was âmean-spirited.â That was, for those keeping track, one election ago.
Now Trump wants all Muslims barred. (Ahem.)
True, Trump has been willing to sacrifice his own brand for the sake of his newly conservative postureâa sign that he is serious.
But let us stipulate, for argumentâs sake, that Trump has a âmixed record on conservatism,â as my colleague Ben Shapiro put it rather diplomatically.
There are many conservatives who still support him wholeheartedly, and there is a real conservative case for Trump. And I say this as an observer who has been skeptical of Trump from the start.
The Buckley rule. William F. Buckley, Jr., whom Trump cites to defend âNew York values,â urged conservatives to support the most conservative candidate who can win.

So right you are, because once The Great Wall of Trump is built, the following issues will begin to be resolved:
Jobs
Better wages for us.
Medicaid
Emergency Services
Crime
Anchor babies
Social Security
Overcrowded schools
Less traffic congestion
Fewer auto accidents
Reduced drug running
More room in our jails and prisons
Fewer new diseases.
No more need of "Press 1 for English"
Fortunately, I don’t care about the “Buckley” rule or even Reagans 11th Commandment. I am quite able to decide things for myself without being told what to do.
To beat the Clintons, and that is what we are talking about, here, there has to be a no more mr nice guy approach. There are no conservative who fit that description
It’s only possible to use Trump and conservative in the same sentence as long as one is not saying Trump is a conservative.
I like Cruz. Have been watching him since nov 2012 when he said we’re going to get the country back
I’m not seeing him winning the general
If you are a conservative you know you cannot have one without the other.
Do you suppose that the founding fathers would entertain the idea for one second that they should have a leader unencumbered by devotion to constitutional ideals? Why do you think they picked Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence? Because they knew he was a leader in because they knew he was grounded in the fundamental political theory of the day which has proved timeless. That is why they picked James Madison, "the father of the Constitution," to be a president of the United States.
A leader who has no constitutional sense is a tyrant. A leader who has no constitutional sense can well be an egomaniac. A current day "leader" without any demonstrated devotion to our Constitution is called "Donald Trump."
Looks sort of like my desk on a larger scale. That thing on the bottom right looks like a cat—like the one that’s sometimes found on my desk.
Hear, hear!
Sorry Cruzers, but I just don't think Ted can win and that's a violation of the Buckley Rule
How so?
Given that the Buckley rule suggest supporting, "the rightward-most viable candidate", and we can only call Mr. Trump Conservative if we believe what he's been saying for the last 9 months vs. any positions prior.
Boy it seems we are going to be having another YUGE bash Trump day on this site!!! GO TRUMP!!!
I know Trump is conservative... he wants to conserve.
Redefining "conservative" may help you feel better, but it doesn't change the fact that Mr. Trump is a NE liberal at heart.
Go check that quote and get back to me.
That thing on the bottom right looks like a cat...
I thought it looked like a robot my grandson had.
I don’t think ANY Trump supporters think he is a purist conservative, WE DON’T CARE we held our noses and voted for Romney, McCain now we are going to choose who WE want and WE are NOT backing down regardless of what ANYONE says!!! WE are circling the wagons just like the DEMS do, Cruz can NOT win in general!!!
People create, find, and carry out jobs. It's the way God has created the world and punished us for sin.
Governments do not create jobs and if we get into a policy debate on this we are fighting for a boondoggle from a sand castle.
Genesis 3:19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Cruz can’t win general.
I assure you, no redefining from this poster (see tag).
Trump polls worse than Cruz against Hillary. The Buckley rule demands that you support Rubio.
RCP average. Clinton v. Trump = Clinton +2.7 Clinton v Cruz = Cruz +1.3 at least be honest.
