In Iowa, Trump tries out some old-fashioned campaigning
The Washington Post ^ | January 24 at 7:09 PM | By Jenna Johnson and and Robert Costa

"With the Feb. 1 caucuses quickly approaching, Trump made seven major appearances in seven days in the state last week, spending two nights and trying out retail politics. The overnights gave the billionaire real-estate developer a closer look at life in Iowa, beyond what he sees out the windows of his private jet and motorcade. He marveled at how Iowa has good steak and how the television airwaves are packed with so many attack ads.

"I like it. I like it," Trump said Sunday morning. "I like staying, it's really nice. The hotels were beautiful; they were clean, nice. I'll be here next week. I'll be here a lot."

His visit was quieter than his massive rallies, although he was recognized everywhere he went. Word that Trump was spending more time in the state prompted curious speculation.

Trump spent the night at Pella's Royal Amsterdam Hotel, venturing to the restaurant for dinner with campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and spokeswoman Hope Hicks.

The candidate was offered a private dining room but declined, instead choosing to eat in the center of the main room as college basketball games played on the bar's televisions. Trump, who does not drink alcohol, ordered cans of soda. As patrons lined up at a buffet for prime rib, they asked Trump for pictures and autographs.

Later, Trump declared the meal "really good" and "really excellent."

What's so interesting about this article is I watched Trump tweet at 0400 on Sunday morning. I was at work, we met on twitter like two spirits in the night - both concerned about our contry. It was cool to think of him alone and awake in his motel room thinking about our country.

That is the kind of president I want.

It's so amazing Trump has avoided the elitist label. He connects with ordinary hard working Americans on a very personable level. It's like he's one of us. We have his back and he has ours. in Pella Trump read a critique of the NR article "against Trump" and pointed out the little critics do but criticize. "What have they done?" he asked. I think of him, his pathetic critics and am reminded of a Man in the Arena. So I dedicate this to the most unique, gifted, and capable man I have ever seen run for president.

LOL, no. It was the Royal Amsterdam. Pella IA is a very small town, around 10,000 people. Very interesting he would stay there away from home. Very interesting view of Trump, the man.

Trump is very down to earth. I saw that this summer when I was at Trump Tower for lunch. Glad to see he’s staying in hotels and getting good Midwestern steaks!

Wonder how much the blizzard in NYC made it a better idea to stay in Iowa?

Before Mark Levin went off the rails, he dubbed Trump the “Blue Collar Billionaire.” I think that fits him.

He strikes you as a regular schmoe who happens to be a multi-billionaire. Levin has his purity test that only he makes.

Pray America wakes

Eric says his dad would rather eat a cheeseburger than attend a fancy dinner.
