I am Catholic but this whole concept of participating in debauchery before Lent makes no sense to me, perhaps my inner Puritan.

Pretty soon they’ll be shutdown permanently so as not to offend Muslims.

Carnivals are debauchery?
What kind of carnivals do you go to?

With Brazil holding the Olympic Games this summer, why are they worried? They should make millions from the international visitors.

How much can it cost to get people together to wear some costumes, walk in a parade and drink?
The Mummers of Philly started that way....

Pikers. New Orleans and some surrounding communities did not cancel carnival after Katrina.

I have never been to Brazil (and have no desire to ever go there), but, from what I have seen in news clips about these celebrations, I would say it’s a good thing that these disgusting displays will not go forward.

I was in Rio for the last couple of days of Carnival about 35 years ago.Pretty impressive...but my most vivid memory is that the guy got I chummy with on the plane (a Canadian doctor) was robbed of his camera right next to me.
Rio is,in places,a beautiful city but it's *definitely* Third World...100%!
