Putin disagreed with specific aspects of the Leninist heritage, not the whole package. We may want to turn his recent comments into an endorsement or a repudiation of Leninism, but it's not that simple.

Putin is a Russian state nationalist who supports a strong state and what makes for a powerful government and an enduring national structure, be it Stalin or be it the tsar. You can't read him in terms of Western concern for individual liberty or democracy.
