Ted Cruz Tells Reporters "I'm a Christian First, American Second"
Yahoo News ^ | 25 Jan 2016 | Tom McKay

According to presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, there's one thing that more important to him than the country he's running to lead: his God.

In a remarkable exchange in New Hampshire, Politico reports, Cruz told reporters "I'm a Christian first, American second, conservative third and Republican fourth."

"I'll tell ya, there are a whole lot of people in this country that feel exactly the same way," he added.

Cruz, currently ranked second in GOP candidate polls according to RealClearPolitics, enjoys wide support among evangelical Christians in important, early-voting primary states like Iowa, where Cruz is locked in a tight race with current frontrunner Donald Trump. Cruz repeatedly accused Trump and his support of "more deal-making" and enjoying the support of unpopular "establishment" Republicans.

By proclaiming himself a Christian first and an American second, Cruz is professing higher loyalties than the United States — odd for a candidate who has repeatedly accused Muslims of doing much the same thing.

It is a truth that is acknowledged in the foundation of our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence.

nobody on a website who is a stranger to me, has the authority to tell me what my faith is or isn’t.

How absurd, who did that?

So where in there does it say those rights are guaranteed? I see the restriction placed on Congress, but I see nothing which declares that States are also restricted.

I choose to go by what it actually says instead of what you wish it said.

Good point, but you can thank Honest Abe for making the federal government superior to the states. But I will say that the prohibition against infringement kind of implies that they are inviolable rights.

I didn’t make the rules what they are.

Absolutely. But it is God who grants these rights - not the Constitution.

Of course not.

This isn’t about sinning. This is about portraying himself as someone he’s not.
He’s running to represent Caesar, not God (0.o I think. It’s not clear. The presidency isn’t part of the clergy).

That position requires the perception that he is who he professes to be, is trustworthy (honesty & integrity are required), that he will act in America’s best interests, & that he has sound judgement.

It’s not his detractors’ fault that, to date, he has failed on all counts. It’s his. Hector him about it.

Puritans were a cult.

Matthew 5:11
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Why is government supposed to obey the constitution in the first place?

There is no established religion in this country, nor should there be.

While there has never been an official federal government supported church, at the time of the Bill of Rights and up to the Civil War, many of the individual states had state supported churches...

You said there is no “established religion” in this country. I am merely pointing out that for a good portion of our history as a nation, there WERE “established” religions in the country - they were just established at the state level, not the federal level.

And that still doesn’t have any point I can determine.

Are there any now? Is there any state that has an official church? If not, why? Finally, should there be?
