Donald J. Trump is not usually a candidate who invokes the words of evangelical voters. But on Sunday, he went to church in eastern Iowa, where he studied "humility," he later told attendees at a rally.
Mr. Trump sat for the entire service, which lasted over an hour, at First Presbyterian Church here, accompanied by Deborah Whitaker, whose son was killed in an accident shortly after returning from a tour of duty.
From the front of the church, the pastor acknowledged the presence of Mr. Trump, who sat in the fifth pew, with Ms. Whitaker to his right, sharing a book of prayer. When the collection plate was passed, Mr. Trump tossed in money; two crisp $50 bills peeked out from under a handful of singles minutes later.
He listened to a children's chorus and shook hands with people sitting behind him when it came time to offer greetings to others. Two of his security guards sat behind him, and his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, and his spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, sat in the pew in front of him.
Mr. Trump, who sometimes reminds people of his Presbyterian faith, has nonetheless generally avoided speaking the language of the more-religious voters in the Iowa caucuses. But at a rally on Sunday, he mentioned attending church.
"We talked about humility in church today," Mr. Trump told the crowd. "I don't know if that was aimed at me, perhaps," he joked, drawing laughs.

Oh please; you’re just embarrassing yourself.
There’s a good chance the “humility” speech was aimed at the media, attending the service only to try and dig up dirt on Trump.
True, but the Cruz supporters don’t care and won’t believe this.
The 50's could have been from Trump or from someone else.
That can be different for project or special offerings.
Heâs gonna win Iowa. Ping.Sorry, can't happen. No retail campaigning, no ground game...can't happen < /sarcasm>
I have never seen anything like what Trump is doing. It’s amazing what a hard worker he is and brings up the comment that luck is something like 90% work.
Read Mark Styne’s column about going to the rally in Vermont and he said there weren’t the usual collection of consultants milling around backstage trying to sound important. Instead there were only a couple of people and Trump. The man is practically a one man army.
And I would check the collection plate for the $50 bills after the media has snooped in it.

Nice try but you just looked silly. No such thing as conservatives or liberals. There is only what a person stands and believes for. Grow up! Listen to what Trump offers and he does what he says. And quickly. Not like the established idiots we have in the House, Senate, and Supreme Court who get nothing done to stop America from a dictatorship.
He joked. Gez, lighten up.
True dat.....put the bucks in the envelope and you'll be on the preferred donor list..........
Wrong, I’m not the one hitching my wagon to a weather vane for the sake of “winning”. I don’t vote for the Clintons or their friends.
Sore Cruzerman looks bad on you. :-)
“No such thing”.... That’s the uniparty!
The service, which Trump's campaign invited several reporters to observe, included hymns, readings and a performance by the children's choir. Cream-colored stained glass in the window cast a golden glow.
At one point, Trump shared a prayer book with Debra Whitaker, an Iowa supporter seated to his right. She put her hand gently around Trump's waist as the congregation sang Hymn 409, "God is Here!" Trump could be seen by some mouthing along.
At one point, as church-goers offered each other wishes of peace, Trump received warm greetings from those around him.
When it was time to offer tithes, Trump was seen digging into his pants' pocket. Two folded $50 bills were later spotted in a collection plate that was passed down his pew.
One reading during the service, about the importance of humility, included a reference that caught Trump's ear.
"Can you imagine eye telling hand, 'Get lost, I don't need you' or hearing the head telling the foot, 'You're fired, your job has been phased out?'" the reader said. "You're fired!" was Trump's signature catchphrase when he hosted "The Apprentice" television show.
"I heard that," Trump later said, when asked about the reference. "I wondered if that was for me. They didn't even know I was coming, so I doubt it. But it's an appropriate phrase."
In her sermon, the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Pamela Saturnia, also made several references with resonance for the 2016 race.
"Jesus is teaching us today that he has come for those who are outside of the church," she said, preaching a message of healing and acceptance for "those who are the most unloved, the most discriminated against, the most forgotten in our community and in our world."
Among those she cited were "the Syrian refugees" and "the Mexican migrants." Trump has advocated barring all Syrian refugees from entering the country because of potential security risks and deporting all of the estimated 11 million people living in the United States illegally. He's said he wants to create a safe zone for refugees instead.
I don’t put my faith in a man or his mythology.
Thank you for your post. Judging the candidates religiousness is sickening on all sides. God is our judge and he alone reads the heart.
He was for the “DREAMers” and the Syrian refugees before the polical winds blew the weathervane candidate in the opposite direction.
The exception is when I made a pledge. That is always put in an envelope and marked because they need to know where it goes.
Love that!!
Lol.
