7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Alaska

(CNN)A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake’s epicenter hit near Cook Inlet, 162 miles southwest of Anchorage. It was about 50 miles deep.
Joshua Veldstra, a professional photographer who lives in Homer, said the earthquake lasted about 30 seconds.
“When it hit, it was just soft at first, and it just kept getting bigger,†Veldstra said. “It was one of those moments where you didn’t’ know if it was going to get worse or if it was going to calm down.â€
Anchorage police tweeted that there were no reports of major damage or injury following the earthquake.
The USGS reported that there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage, but the agency’s “Did You Feel It?†map shows strong shaking could be felt near Anchorage.
The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami threat from the quake because of how deep it struck.
Two smaller earthquakes — a 4.0 and a 3.2 — struck within 30 minutes after the first one.

We spend our winters in Fairbanks, summers up along the Yukon; near the border. Haven’t felt a good shaker since Nov 3rd 2002. That one was a 7.9 and the ground opened up in my front yard; half expected to see the devil come crawling out. That one broke all our utility lines and my well head in laundry room blew off; had a geyser hitting the ceiling for over an hour; quite the ground pressure. I went to bed about 1 am last night, never as much felt a thing. Time to clean up folks, fire up generator for football; no big deal.
Given the recent activity at the Oregon fault, I’d be holding onto my britches for the next month.

I had just got home from the Bingo hall in Wasilla when it hit, you had a strong rolling jolt and then a boat like sway for 30 seconds, actually made me queasy. No damage that i could see then, will check later on.

All is well here in Anchorage, but it was long and bumpy and all sorts of different kinds of shaking! Some things fell off shelves, some drawers opened, a clock fell off he wall and it seemed to go on forever. Mom was sitting up and hanging onto the handrail by her bed.
Took me a while to figure out the steady bumping noise I could hear when I went to look around...it was shaking enough to make the 3 hanging light globes in the stairwell bump against each other. They usually sway, but this time they bumped into each other.
