Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump got a boost for his campaign Saturday when Sen. Chuck Grassley appeared at a a rally here for the billionaire businessman.
Mr. Grassley, who is easily one of the most popular Republican politicians in Iowa, had previously distanced himself from Mr. Trump, including publicly opposing his plan to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States.
In a speech, Mr. Grassley stopped short of endorsing Mr. Trump. Instead he called for Trump supporters to keep up the energy they showed at rallies throughout the state and turn out to caucus for Republicans on Feb. 1.
He came as close as possible to giving Mr. Trump a Grassley stamp of approval, including using Mr. Trump's campaign slogan.
"We have an opportunity again to make america great again," Mr. Grassley told the crowd filling an auditorium at Central College.
"I'm excited to see the big crowds because of the big energy that comes with it," he said. "And that's what it is going to take for us to win back the White House in November."
He said that he was invited by Mr. Trump to attend the rally and that he appreciated having Mr. Trump's support.
Still, Mr. Gassley chose to attended the rally at Central College while Mr. Trump's chief rival for the nomination, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, campaigned elsewhere in the Hawkeye State.
"We need you. The energy that's shown here has to be repeated every day between now and the election. Go to the caucuses and show America that Iowa voters matter," said Mr. Grassley.

Your answer to that will reveal a lot.
Just checked the Ford museum web cam. Jerry and Betty both seem to be still in their graves under the small amount of snow.
Only one?
Have you been called a “COMMIE” yet, as I have, several times over?
No, I mean literal FU’s. LOL. Got 3 a couple days ago. I’m not counting the “you’re a liberal”, etc. :)
Sure, we will just drift along as we have. Everything will be fine.
Whatever you say Tina.
Thus Trump is now their guy.
Anyone on an actual ballot.
So, no, I’ll discard people like Charles Manson. But anyone on a ballot.
Yes.
Hank
BINGO!
If Trump were a conservative he’d be ASHAMED of having the likes of Babbling Bob Dole and Trent Lott supporting him. I know if Dole supported Cruz it would give me paus.
Hank
Now it's all about tying Trump and his supporters to the Fuehrer.
Do make the effort to stay current.
Thank you. Bookmarked.
Another nut job.
You're gonna see a Luke 24 type thing. Trust Fund Donnie can pull it off for old Gerry!
Hank
We've had vigorous primary discussions and infighting before, but at least I could respect differing opinions. This is just crazy.
It is in the Bible.
Here ya go Hank.
You don't have that power.
“The GOP Elite hate and loath Trump but this is minor compared to the hatred of Ted Cruz.”
Which is one of the main reason’s I will vote for Trump.
It is so astonishing to me that the gope is so blind to the mood of conservatives. Dole’s endorsement of Trump is almost certain to give Cruz a boost.
Rather than understand what’s going on and change their behavior to serve the voters, they try everything they can to keep their positions of privilege, without any material change.
I wonder if Grassley will perform a fake Presidential swearing in ceremony for Trump, you know to keep up with Glenn Beck.
It’s essentially an endorsement.
