NYPD: 'We Will Arrest You' If On the Road
The Weekly Standard ^

Martial law has been decalred in New York City. This comes in response to this year's biggest snow storm.

The New York Police Department is threatening to arrest anyone on the road. They are calling it a "travel ban."

"After 2:30 p.m and you're on the road, we will arrest you @NYPDChiefofDept says," NYPD says.

"Stay off the road, @NYPDChiefofDept says. We don't want to have to arrest you."

As a true Albertan, if anyone told me I couldn’t travel, I would have very serious issues with that. I’m a free man. I don’t need permission to go where I see fit. I accept responsibility for my actions. I don’t recognize what passes for authority these days.

If I deem it safe enough for myself to travel, that’s fine. My own call.

No chain laws here in the east for the most part, and the snow is of a different quality than western snow. Water content in the snow is much higher and rolling resistance is higher. The snow packs better and sometimes chains are fairly ineffective because tires are lifted by snow and cannot bite the road surface.

Some people bitch just to bitch. It’s like breathing for them. It comes naturally. I see a LOT of them in this thread.

I don’t think that’s Hillary, I think it’s a fed up American tired of having his rights taken away and probably won’t tolerate much more crap.

I did not realize that. Maybe that is why it takes down trees and power lines so much. Thanks. Learn something everyday here.

I also didn’t have a problem with it, and I think DeBlasio made the right decision.

This is the first time I have ever said that, and it will probably be the last.

DeBlasio is an arrogant commie ass, but in this instance I do not think his action was egregious.

The roads are plowed and mostly clear today, with life in NYC getting back to normal. No more “martial law”.

There might have been days of delays if drivers inexperienced with driving in heavy snow needed to be rescued. Also, emergency vehicles may have been blocked.

q: What's all that white stuff?

a: Privilege.

Nope, it's the new independently spirited minority. Oh we can't have that all over the streets now can we? Contact the mayor to do something about white removal please.

Thank you. I am distressed by many things that he and his crazy City Council do. But when we had a problem intersection in my neighborhood, he took charge. There was a bit of overkill, like closing an entire lane of traffic on Broadway so drivers would realize they weren’t supposed to turn left, and that has created some backup and jams at a corner that leads to the West Side Highway and so is difficult anyway.

But his heart was in the right place, same as with this seemingly drastic move.

It was not "Martial law" it was a travel ban as in "temporarily keep your damn cars off the roads until the blizzard is over and the streets have been plowed". Perfectly normal and acceptable under the circumstances. FWIW, it was lifted this morning.

Most of the boros and townships here in central PA did the exact same thing (enacted travel bans) from yesterday afternoon until it was lifted this morning.

The plow trucks have enough of a difficult time but even more so when they have to deal with stupid motorists who get stuck in the middle of the road because they don't have good winter driving skills or are not driving big 4x4's and even some of them who because they have a 4x4, think they are invincible and end up getting hopelessly stuck. Not to mention that it impedes emergency vehicles from getting through

People in places like Colorado, North Dakota and Wyoming have to be laughing their dupas off.

Completely different situation in sparsely populated areas from what we in densely populated urban areas have to deal with.

Having grown up in the Midwest, I usually share the FR distrust of government, but if there is a case where government should be heavy-handed at times to preserve public order, it’s a high-density borough like Manhattan. This doesn’t justify Robert Moses-like authoritarian planarachy or social justice lunacy.

By the way, I joined the Metropolitan Club, and hope to see you at the next debate watching this Thursday.

John Yoo, faithful public servant in the W. Bush administration, once said at a debate on executive power that Katrina was an instance where presidential action would have been advisable. He was answering a question from an African American, but I don’t think he was pandering. He says what he thinks, and recently took the side of the anchor babies at a debate sponsored by the same group.

For what it’s worth. A similar situation to the present one.

Wow, what a mess they had on their hands. I’m really happy they were able to clear it up with no serious injuries.
